After that, straight to a surf session - see 'Shark Week'.

And finally, some volleyball at 25th Street. I played awful, but I refuse to believe it was because I was tired. I did twist my ankle pretty good while spiking in warm-ups. Excuses are awesome.

on thursday night i sat through the vodafone new zealand music awards
(VNZMAs). apparently this was the 44th annual award show... its the
first time ive actually watched it. im finally at the point where i
can honestly say i like new zealand music. ive always liked one or two
nz bands, but for toooooooo long they all sounded the same. i used to
go to gigs when i was at highschool and see the few nz bands i could
smash inconsiderately into other people to.... shihad, head like a
hole, the exponants etc etc, and the odd rockquest band - mary staple,
attica zoe... yeh i was a dedicated rock quest groupie throughout
school.

everything else sounded the same. there was an nz sound that i guess i
cant define but everyone seemed to have it and it was boring. i loved
going to gigs and spent many nights of the week at bars like indigo
and bodega and valve dancing and moshing and getting intoxicated and
having the time of my life. but i didnt want to actually listen to any
of the music in any other setting... on my walkman or discman as
technology ticked along. but these days, probably because of C4, im
loving nz music even now that im sober...

i went through a brit pop phase, ya know the verve and blur and i even
met liam gallagher outside an oasis concert. but i never liked brit
music for long. so it was pretty much american music that rocked my
inner being. ive been a music junkie for a good 75% of my life. and
ive been too far too many concerts. given that i live in little nz, it
does astound me when i look back at the concerts ive been to...

and ive always had a soft spot for a great female artist. week after
week at indigo bar i was one of many dedicated phuego
groupies. RIP helen

"The band ends, on amicable terms. We played 7 gigs, and had a good
time. Sadly, Helen passed away 3 months later, in what can only be
described as a massive stupid tragedy . Helen RIP. We'll always love
you. "

so back to the present day.

the award show this year was taken out but ladyhawke. she won my vote
simply by wearing doc boots and accepting each award so awkwardly with
genuine shock, without fail, every single time. i had a bit of a
google and learnt that ladyhawke aka pip brown was diagnosed with
aspergers syndrome. her ability to manage her condition and become as
successful as she has astounds me and is true testament of her talent
and determination. in my field of work ive had a bit of exposure to
aspergers and other points on the autism spectrum and which obviously
being a million miles away from claiming any expertise on the subject
i have noticed a creative trend whether that is in an obvious way in
areas of music or art or in the way that thoughts are processed and
answers are arrived at.

so big ups to ladyhawke and her success this year!

"The singer was born 28 years ago in Masterton, a small town near
Wellington. "Growing up there was amazing," she enthuses. "I love
suburbia. We're lucky in New Zealand because there's a lot of space
and not many people. It was always sunny. I have great memories of
growing up there." But her undiagnosed Asperger's created all sorts of
problems. "I wouldn't go to school when I was younger, and when I did,
I would just stare out the window. I didn't like anyone touching me
and I didn't like people coming near me." Even so, she excelled at art
and music from an early age, thanks to her parents' encouragement –
her mother sings, and her step-father is a jazz drummer. "I started
playing piano when I was eight. It came quite naturally, but I was
just bored," she says. "So I took up drums when I was 11 and that was
it for me. I loved it. After that, I picked up lots of instruments
instinctively."

"Despite how far she's come, personally and creatively, Brown admits,
"I have my weird moments when I revert back to my old ways."

"Those "old ways" included locking herself up in her house in
Melbourne for three months, after which, enough was enough.
Two-and-a-half years ago, she went to a doctor and got her diagnosis –
much to her relief, as it "explained so much". "When I moved to
Sydney, it got to a point when I was so sick of feeling like everybody
hated me," she admits. "So I went to a doctor who referred me on to
somebody. I ended up having a few sessions with a psychologist and she
told me, 'I have Asperger's as well.' It was really inspiring."

next up on the female crushlist would be gin wigmore. i hadnt heard of
gin until smashproofs hit brother ft gin broke records sitting at
number 1 on the charts here for weeks and weeks. what a fascinating
voice! could it really be real? follow up songs like oh my and her
debut album holy smoke... really can that voice be real? well
everyone, she performed live at the awards and yep, its real and she
is amazing. i love gin wigmore and its not just because of her
tattoos.
