My friend JC was on business in Guangzhou with his whole division and since I have never been to GZ, I decided to go up after work and hang out.
GZ is just a 2hr train ride away, I took the 7:30 train from Hung Hom and arrived at 9:30. Train ticket HKD190. Can go via bus which is cheaper but takes a bit more time.
Arrived at the hotel and then we went straight to Club Bound, according to That's Pearl River Delta expat magazine, it's winner of the best new club/bar award. Pretty chill place with a great rooftop terrace. If it wasn't a windy 14 degrees out, that would have been a great place to chill. Instead, we got a table inside. DJ was spinning some funky beats so we danced till late into the night. I was surprised that over 1/2 of the people there were foreigners.
We stumbled out at 2:30 and went to Chowchou restaurant 粥家壮 aka The village of gruel. I mean, who can resist a place with a name like that?? Turned out to be a great choice as they had this amazing seafood congee which seemed like it had 1 whole shrimp in every spoonful!
Woke before noon. As the hotel was in the brand new CBD district, there was all sorts of funky construction going on. That tower itself is massive, it must be over 80 stories high as the little building next to it is "only" 30 floors! There was also this weird black angular cube building right next to our hotel, I wonder what it will be used for....
Went out in the afternoon to walk around. Of course we went to the touristy 步行街 which seems like every Chinese city has. Pretty standard crowded shopping street with funny Chingrish brand names (more on that
later). Then we headed to 天河城 mall and played at the video game arcade, haha haven't done that in years. Good times.
Dinner at the brand new Lee Garden GZ (yes same as the one in HK). We had a massive set dinner for 4 which included 3 appetizers, soup, duck, lobster, grouper, veg, dessert for just RMB700. Quality was just as good as HK but at this price it was a steal! After dinner I hopped on the train back to HK.
Of course I only got to see a small fraction of the city (it's bigger than HK), will definitely go back and explore more.
