The goodie bag from the #t3gadgetwards - I got 2 BlueRays (one kindly donated by @michchapman I didn't steal it!) and a few other things. Not sure I can pull off the "Rose" earphones tho.

Hot off the heels of my previous post... I came home today surprised to find a mystery box from MINI. Given the fact that I've never done an "unboxing" photo session, I decided that this would be my first. The box contained the "MINI Adventure Field Kit". The field kit included some things that I had seen before from the Unofficial MINI Owners Manual, but it also contained lots of new goodies, including:

  • Pen
  • Hardcover Notebook
  • Antenna Ball (which quickly became a toy for Bean)
  • Mousepad
  • Roadside Assistance Card (pretty cool actually)
  • "ZUG" Boot Badge
  • "Window Poetry" window clings
  • Courtesy Cards to give to those who ask about your MINI
  • "Top Secret" folder filled with a magnifying glass, 3-D glasses, and yes... a decoder ring

One of the things that I found most interesting was that the packet wasn't filled with generic marketing materials. Some of the contents where generic, but some of the stuff in the box was directed at me, not just the owner of a MINI, but the owner of a MINI Clubman. The "ZUG" Boot Badge is a great example of this. Those familiar with MINI may know that each trim has it's own nickname of sorts. The MINI Hardtop is the "ZIG", the Convertible is the "ZAG", and the Clubman is the "ZUG". The boot badge was designed specifically for the swing open boot/trunk of the Clubman, with the badge split in two. Even the box that the "field guide" was packaged in made you think that this box was packed up just for you. As someone who has packed many boxes, stuffed with many pieces of marketing collateral I know that this is something that they do for everyone, but it is one of the reasons why I love MINI.

Few companies have created such a cult and have inspired brand loyalty like MINI has and I believe a lot of that has to do with the fact that they recognize the consumer as an individual. From the moment you decide to purchase a MINI, it has "you" written all over it. Most MINIs aren't just purchased off of a lot, they are built specifically for you. From picking the basics like paint color and wheel style, to mixing and matching trims and roof designs, it's all about the consumer's individual style. We all want to feel like we are apart of something and that we matter. By continuing to recognize the individual well after the initial point of purchase proves that MINI "gets it".

In connection with the release of the new Star Trek movie, working with Paramount Studios, the great folks at IconFactory have done a set of Star Trek icons and phone and desktop wallpapers. They are beautiful work. But the phone wallpapers are a bit plain. So I combined the icons with the wallpapers to create augmented versions.

You can find the IconFactory Star Trek stuff here:
http://iconfactory.com/startrek/

And Roam around the rest of the IconFactory website to find 10s of thousands of free icons and wallpapers. Lots more Trek stuff, but also every other movie you can imagine and lots of others besides, from the cute and cuddly to the bold and ugly. They've got great icons for everyone from little princesses to geeks and gear heads.

Most of my friends know I am a Trekkie from waaaay back! And yes, I can't wait for the premiere of the new movie this Friday!

I've been collecting the Hallmark Star Trek Ornaments since 1992. I missed out on the initial Starship Enterprise release in 1991 because Hallmark massively underestimated demand. I of course eventually picked one up on EBay at an exorbitant price to complete the collection. This year's release is the Klingon K'Tinga Battlecruiser, introduced in the opening scene of 1979's Star Trek - The Motion Picture (this is of course, the 30th anniversary of that movie).

The full history of the Star Trek ship ornaments*:
1991 - Starship U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 (TOS)
1992 - Shuttlecraft Galileo (TOS era)
1993 - Starship U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D (TNG)
1994 - Klingon Bird of Prey (TOS Movies onward)
1995 - Romulan Warbird (TNG)
1996 - Starship U.S.S. Voyager (Voyager)
1997 - Starship U.S.S. Defiant (DS9)
1998 - Starship U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-E (TNG Movies)
1999 - Runabout U.S.S. Rio Grande (DS9)
2000 - Borg Cube (TNG)
2001 - Space Station Deep Space Nine (DS9)
2002 - Delta Flyer (Voyager)
2003 - Romulan Scorpion (TNG Movie - Nemesis)
2004 - Vulcan Command Ship (Enterprise)
2005 - Starship U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-A (TOS Movies)
2006 - TOS 40th Anniversary U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 (essentially a reissue of the first ornament)
2007 - Starship U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D Future (TNG series finale)
2008 - Starship U.S.S. Reliant (TOS Move - The Wrath of Khan)
2009 - Klingon K'Tinga Battlecruiser (TOS Movies)
* These are the Star Trek ships Hallmark released as Christmas Tree ornaments in the ship line. They also released several ships over the years that were intended as desktop displays.

And almost as exciting, this year Hallmark will also be releasing a Robby the Robot from the classic science fiction film Forbidden Planet
