My cycling team mate Dan Cole posted a text about Darwin today (here) and referenced an interesting article in Science (here) that highlights the differences of how evolution and the creation according to Genesis is viewed in the U.S. vs countries such as Sweden.
Per the article over 80% in Sweden accepts the evolution theory and only 40% in the United States (20% unsure). Read the article - it's very interesting and confirms many of my own observations of the "subtle" differences of living in the U.S. vs. Sweden. For example, I may be wrong but I don't think there has ever been a political party in Sweden that used creationism as a part of a political platform as a major party has done in the U.S.
This also reminds me about when one my class mates in high school in Sweden answered an exam question with references to the creation when the science teacher was looking for the evolution theory. We did learn about the creation in our religion class as well, and it was actually taught simultaneously with the science class. I was fortunate to get at least somewhat balanced and informed view. I hope this also will be the case for the children in the future. Religion, politics, and science are all important, but I'm of the opinion that they at least in the educational system should be taught independently from each other and without external pressures and agendas.
