The first thing you read on the Giapo Credo is "we are in business to put a smile on children's faces!" Of course we see a lot of smiles from children who come to Giapo, but what about those who can't come? 

 

Starship Children's Hospital seemed the best place to start. There are a lot of children there who need more smiles in their lives. 

 

At the end of October I met Jessica Sullivan and Samantha Binks from the Starship Foundation, and we came up with the idea of Secret Santa Givers. On November 28th we launched the programme, and we would love you to be part of it!

 

It's simple to be a Secret Santa Giver. There are three ways to do it:

 

 

  1. Bring a $35 value toy gift and so we can put it in the gift net strung up in our windows.
  2. Donate $35 in store to go towards Christmas presents for the children, and as a thank you from the children, you'll receive a voucher for five free waffle cones. 
  3. Be a virtual Secret Santa! Visit our Givealittle page (https://www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/giveachildasmile )

 

 

These kids deserve something special this Christmas, so your $35 will buy presents. The waffle cones are genuinely a gift to you, Giapo is supporting this cause up to $10,000. 

 

We're also looking for Secret Santa Ambassadors to help us enroll more Secret Santa Givers. Just ask in store for more details. 

 

We'll be delivering the presents on Tuesday, December 22nd. Would you like to come with us? Just think how good it would be to see the smiles on those children's faces.

Washington Business Journal's Tierney Plumb recently reported on the sale of the Pitango Gelato, located in Logan Circle's Metropole, for $618,000 ($1,123 per square ft.). The sale was brokered by Calkain Companies and represented "the highest square foot price that was attained to date". Assistant Vice President Rick Fernandez represented the seller.

Yesterday I went to Omaha to meet with our supplier of organic bluberries and strawberries.  It was an awesome experience, we learnt many things about crops and berries and did not have ideas. Farmer Rob was a great host.. I will be posting a video of the day including our informative interview with Rob our farmer and then me handpicking some fabulous blueberries, promptly turned into a fabulous giapo when I was back at the shop.

Hello world. It is Gianpaolo writing. 

 

This is our first Giapo blog post. If you know Giapo, you know that we have been around in the social media ( facebook, twitter and youtube) since before opening the doors, we have not had a web-log yet because it is just that we have been failing in setting up our website.... being caught  with two unlucky "suppliers" in a row..
One left for Italy without completing it... and the other is in the middle of a company crisis. 

Never mind, power of social media, we are now live thanks to easy Posterous. 
The name of our main blog is Mad about Giapo. 
We will write here all the crazy things we are doing to make giapo the dreamiest gelato ever.
This blog will be co-written by me and Annarosa my wife. 
We will write about what giapo cares. What matters to giapo (you)... What we do.
What giapo stands for and our plans and ideas towards the dream gelato we want to do for you.
We will share our emotions and our little secrets.

P.S.: The next post will be about our strategy to ban any type of hydeogenated fats from our production and our mix ins wall.

Dulu, kalau saya mau makan gelato, saya harus pergi ke Kafe Pisa di Thamrin untuk menikmatinya. Biarpun sekarang gelato sudah terkenal, toko yang menjualnya masih belum banyak dan kebanyakan terpusat di Jakarta. Kini, saya tidah harus pergi lagi ke Jakarta karena di Depok sudah ada toko gelato.


Toko gelato di Depok berada di toko buku Populer yang bertempat di Margo City, tingkat basement, tidak jauh dari escalator yang menuju ke Giant. Toko ini pertama kali berdiri di tahun 2007. Mulanya, saya pikir ini cuma toko buku biasa. Yang tidak biasa, dia juga berjualan gelato. Aha, ini unik. Setelah beberapa lama, akhirnya ada juga orang yang berani berjualan gelato di Depok.


Rasa yang ditawarkan di gelato Populer memang tidak terlalu banyak dan cenderung standar. Ada rasa buah-buahan seperti strawberry, blackcurrant, mangga dan vanila. Untuk yang lainnya adalah coklat, coklat cookies, cappucino, coffee toffee, bubble gum, dll. Karena pilihan rasanya tidak banyak, maka kesempatan untuk berkesperimen dengan mencampur aneka rasa dalam satu mangkuk atau cone juga terbatas. Cita rasa dari gelatonya sendiri saya anggap sedang-sedang saja.


Untuk harga, pemilik toko gelato ini saya akui memang cerdik. Semua orang yang pernah makan gelato pasti tahu bahwa harga satu scoop gelato tidak murah. Di Kafe Pisa, satu mangkuk dengan isi dua scoop saja dihargai lebih dari Rp25.000,-. Di gelato Populer, satu scoop dikenai harga 10 ribu rupiah namun dua scoop cuma dihargai 15 ribu rupiah. Murah sekali. Ini tentunya disengaja agar dapat menjaring minat orang Depok untuk tertarik membelinya, minimal sekedar mencoba. Walaupun sudah ada dua mal mewah di Margonda Raya, masih belum banyak orang Depok yang bersedia membayar lebih dari 20 ribu rupiah untuk semangkuk es krim. Huh, Baskin Robbins saja gagal bertahan di Depok pada periode tahun 1995-1997. Selain itu, saya rasa si penjual gelato memang punya tujuan untuk mendidik masyarakat Depok akan gelato.


Gelato sendiri adalah sejenis es krim populer yang berasal dari negara Italia. Meskipun wujudnya seperti es krim, gelato bukanlah es krim biasa yang kita kenal. Perbedaan gelato dan es krim ada di dalam penggunaan krim. Jikalau es krim adalah perpaduan dari susu dan krim, maka gelato adalah murni susu tanpa krim. Karena itu, gelato dianggap lebih baik dari pada es krim berkat kandungan lemak yang lebih rendah.


Sekarang, kalau Anda sedang kepingin makan gelato tapi sedang berada di sekitar Margonda Raya, Anda tidak perlu pusing berpikir untuk pergi ke Jakarta. Langsung saja Anda datang ke Margo City dan menuju tingkat basement dengan menuruni tangga berjalan. Dari escalator, Anda cuma perlu belok ke kiri dan berjalan lurus ke depan. Toko buku Populer sudah persis di depan mata dan gelato berada di sisi kiri toko. Selamat menikmati, :)


PS: Soal pilihan rasa, memang tidak banyak. Untuk citarasa, ya jangan dibandingkan dengan Kafe Pisa dong, harga 15 ribu dengan 30 ribu jelas beda. Oh ya, selain di Margo City, gelato Populer juga sudah buka cabang di Mall of Indonesia (MOI), Kelapa Gading.
