When you start working with Social Media Marketing you need to measure it somehow. All sites and statistics need a place or category. It just makes it easier to find or gather together. Danny Sullivan (Guru) made his categorization on his blog. Here hare his subcategories of Social Media • Social News Sites • Social Bookmarking Sites • Social Networking • Social Knowledge • Social Sharing National Geographic’s subcategories of Social Media are quite similar • Social News Sites Digg Reddit Twitter Slashdot Jaiku • Social Bookmarking Sites StumbleUpon Diigo Delicious Meneame.net Propeller.com • Social Networking Facebook MySpace Orkut Care2 • Social Knowledge Wikipedia Yahoo Answers Squidoo Ask Metafilter • Social Media Sharing YouTube Flickr Tumblr DevianArt Recently I made my own categorization of Social Media and it looks like this. • Social Aggregators/Pushers Ping.fm Friendfeed Hello.txt Popurls Posterous Utterli Disqus • Social Bookmarking/Link sharing Diigo Delicious StumbleUpon Mister Wong Yahoo! Bookmarks • Social Collaboration Acrobat Skype • Social Experience Reporting Flixter Digg Reddit Yelp • Social Location Blogloc Fire Eagle IRL Connect Loki Plazes Tripit • Social Media News Chirps Jaiku Koornk Plurk Twitter Wordpress Blogger Xanga • Social Media Sharing 23 72 Photos Bebo.com Blip.tv Buzznet Drop.io Dropshots Fliggo Moblog Twitpic Viddler.com YouTube Zoomin • Social Live Broadcast Ustream Bambuser I will continue to work on my categories and post changes after evaluation. There are several ways to monitor your social stream but why isn't there easier ways to share it? By sharing, I am thinking beyond having it duplicated to Friendfeed. I want to be able to post the interesting Tweets I see and that spark additional thoughts or opinions. Since everything IS about monitoring I am satisfied I won't miss anything. When I'm watching.

With Threadsy you can monitor your email (aol, gmail, yahoo, hotmail), Twitter (multiply accounts even), Facebook, and even IM (if you're still using it), all within your browser. One tab and in real time. It's not all inbound because you can also compose an email or update your status. Directly to each service.

Friendfeed offers such a wide variety of feeds it will digest. You usually end up duplicating your posts and the content you're watching. This is how Friendfeed becomes it's [your] own worst enemy. You end up sharing so much from  the song you're listening to right now, as you're reading this, to what you'll be eating at a lunch meeting. It can get noisy quick. In order to turn down the noise you need to focus in on one user, one group, or do a search. Not an appealing way to post or share your content.

Everything seems to be in real-time. This is true, but I still like to read certain blogs. So you'll still need a reader. I like to use Google Reader but prefer to read it through Feedly. Feedly in Chrome is best. It's not all reading either. Feedly offers nine 'share buttons' that allow you to share anything you've read with your social network. One of them is my favorite...see below. It is however missing a source: Twitter. My choice, yes, because I could add an RSS feed of my Twitter stream. The downside is that  it will be a LOT of updates to sift through in Feedly.

Posterous makes my blogging easy. As easy as email. I know, cheesy and straight from their site. However it's true. If you're not familiar with Posterous, all you do is send your blog post via email to post [at] posterous [dot] com. Posterous will then send that post to any additional social network you choose. My posts go to Twitter, Friendfeed, Facebook, and an old Wordpress blog I stopped posting to after the election. I picture Posterous as a mega-phone.

So yeah, I have several services I like. They all work extremely well. The only thing is they are all still missing something. Posting. Not just the ability to post but what I want to post. I could see any of these three services filling my need. I am purposely leaving out Friendfeed.

I need the ability to make a blog post out of any status update I want.

If it's from Twitter, I want to turn a status update into a blog post. With the quoted status update and users avatar in the post. As it would if you linked to a specific update. I want this blog post to be done through Posterous. I don't want Posterous to loose site and become a funnel too. I'd rather they stay a megaphone and handled it through their bookmarklet or an added service to something like Threadsy. If it is added to Threadsy then I could comment as I see it coming through my Twitter stream. Allowing me to have my thoughts when I have them; in real-time.

As I was writing this something struck me. I am looking to redefine what it means to "RETWEET". If any of the services I love would think of it as redefining 'retweet'. I believe a solution could be integrated into any of them. (Hint: Threadsy add a Posterous box below the 'retweet' button in the unbound window under each update.)

I left Friendfeed out because I think Facebook is going to do exactly this. Redefine the 'retweet'. Facebook isn't the service I want though.

UPDATE: Wouldn't you know it. Scoble said it first. Better too. He dives deeper into what I want and he gave it a name: Curation. You definitely need to give it a read. Especially if you want to make sense of what I am trying to say. There is something positive to take from this though. My idea is legitimate. Someone else feels the same way I do. For that someone to be Scoble, that feels pretty good too.

I hope this works properly. My other post through Posterous a moment ago left out the first image on FF for some unknown reason. If that happens again, I'll delete this and repost. You should see a new drawing of Cecily, not the sketch that I've posted a couple of times before.

Also, joey has more fun at Disneyland, and I got Luna looking over her shoulder. I might have gotten me with the sassafras leaf if I had been able to get on about an hour earlier. Anyway, very nice to get to draw a new kid today :)

This hits close to home...but I don't have the ability to move back in with my parents. =(

“Friendfeed is not dead. It’s transforming” says Friendfeed Co-Founder
"What is fact, is that Friendfeed as a tool and social medium, ranks above virtually every social networking stream based application currently available – yes, including Twitter with lists. To see it essentially fade into a ghost town would be a huge waste, particularly since the site still maintains an incredibly loyal userbase, whose limits have unfortunately been pushed of late."
Poor FriendFeed. I'm going to miss it when it finally goes. But I'm going to use it until it does.

"In a blog post on October 10th the team at Storytlr let users know that they will be shutting down the service at the end of this year. It’s just another casualty in a long list of Lifestreaming services that have shut down over the last year."
More bad news. But at least it's going open source. That's good news at least.

Stop Overreacting: Hulu Not Ditching Free Yet
"So... this is really no different than what was said a few months back, when News Corp's Jon Miller started saying that Hulu should add subscription offerings. It's the official News Corp. position, ever since Rupert Murdoch suddenly flip flopped and decided free content online is evil. All News Corp. execs have now been making noise about trying to charge for content."
