Five-star Chelsea hammer Rovers

Updated: October 24, 2009, 8:35 AM UK

Chelsea gave Carlo Ancelotti a perfect tonic as they soared back to the top of the Premier League with a 5-0 demolition of Blackburn at Stamford Bridge.

Ancelotti, back in the dugout after visiting his seriously ill father in Italy in midweek, watched his side produce a fabulous performance against ragged Rovers to go two points clear at the summit.

Chelsea destroyed Sam Allardyce's side with two goals from Frank Lampard, one a penalty, plus others from Didier Drogba, Michael Essien and an own goal from Gael Givet.

The game was so one-sided that had Chelsea taken all their first half chances, the scoreline could have been in double figures. But four goals in a 15-minute second half spell handed Rovers their biggest defeat since Allardyce took charge at Ewood Park and kept Ancelotti's 100% home record intact.

Joe Cole, making his first start since January, should have opened the scoring for Chelsea within the opening minute but he somehow headed a cross from Lampard wide of the target from six yards.

Lampard was inches away from giving Chelsea the lead in the 10th minute when his 20-yard shot just evaded the far post. But Chelsea broke the deadlock in the 20th minute with a goal of classic simplicity.

A Blackburn attack broke down allowing Michael Ballack to collect the ball in midfield. The Germany captain fed Nicolas Anelka on the left flank with a superb low pass and when the France international crossed the ball into the six-yard box, it was turned past his own goalkeeper by the unfortunate Givet.

Blackburn had to rely on counter-attacks and in the 25th minute they almost grabbed an equaliser but Morten Gamst Pedersen's 20-yard effort flashed wide of Petr Cech's right-hand post.

Chelsea's players were lining up to shoot and Essien tried his luck from 25 yards in the 29th minute but although the ball dipped violently in the air, it still went over the crossbar.

Lampard wasted another chance to increase Chelsea's lead moments later when Ballack's cross found him unmarked on the edge of the six-yard box. But the England midfielder put his header wide of the target.

In the 33rd minute, Rovers goalkeeper Paul Robinson came to their rescue when Lampard fed Anelka inside the penalty area. A second goal seemed on the cards but Anelka's shot hit Robinson in the chest, much to the frustration of Ancelotti.

It was shooting practice for Chelsea and Robinson did well to punch away a 35-yard blockbuster from Drogba. Five minutes before the break, Anelka turned and twisted before firing an 18-yard shot into the sidenetting.

Pedersen was the first player into the notebook on the stroke of half-time for a foul on Branislav Ivanovic. Seconds later Robinson pulled off a magnificent save to deny Lampard again.

Chelsea, somewhat predictably, went further in front in the 48th minute through Lampard. The England midfielder scored his first goal in open play in the top flight since last April when he finished off a fine Chelsea move. Essien sent Drogba racing into the penalty area and his cross was only half cleared by Lars Jacobsen, leaving Lampard to pick his spot from eight yards.

It was 3-0 in the 51st minute when Essien sent a 35-yard shot thundering beyond the despairing dive of Robinson. Anelka then tried to repeat the feat in the 54th minute and his 20-yard shot was so fierce that Robinson had to save at the second attempt.

It got worse for Rovers in the 58th minute when Ryan Nelsen brought down Drogba inside the penalty area and Lampard converted the spot-kick for his second of the game.

Drogba underlined Chelsea's superiority in the 63rd minute when he rose highest to head home a corner by Lampard to make it 5-0. It was the Ivory Coast international's eighth goal of the season.

In the 67th minute Chelsea replaced defender Ricardo Carvalho with youngster Jeffrey Bruma for his Premier League debut. Cole was then replaced by Daniel Sturridge, making his home league debut, in the 76th minute. Cole received a standing ovation from the fans and a bear hug from Ancelotti.

The England midfielder had shown he was back to his best during an afternoon when Chelsea returned to top form.

Starts off with some motivation from that old sage, 24-year old second-year NFL QB Matt  Ryan...35 seconds in Lil Jon switches themes to getting crunk at the club, obviously.

Also, I just thought of three motivational speeches in sports movie that I'd like to go back in time and switch out whoever is delivering it for Snoop Dogg (Varsity Blues, Any Given Sunday, Slapshot).

Poor old Gareth Southgate. He got crucified pretty much week in, week out last season as Boro got relegated from the Barclays Premier League. The media were after him, his players were moaning and the crowds were gutted to be losing their place in the North East elite (made only slightly better by the fact Newcastle were also relegated).

However, there was one bright shining light for Southgate. It was not all doom and gloom. His chairman and champion Steve Gibson was going to back him to bring the young squad back to the top level of English Football. Southgate was determined and spent the summer earning the club cash by selling the likes of Downing and Huth but consolidating his squad and setting his ambitions for the season ahead. If one thing can be said of Middlesbrough they have a great local spirit and have always had loyalty in their managers.

It had been a bit of an up-and-down start to the campaign. A couple of miserable home defeats were alongside some decent away performances and after beating Derby County 2-0 on Tuesday Southgate's team were sitting pretty in fourth place in the league looking in good shape in what will always be an erratic league. Then came the axe. Game over for Gareth Southgate.

It just does not make any sense to me. I could understand it if he was Roy Keane at Ipswich and his team was still looking for their first win, but in team playing pretty well overall and up near the top-end of the league?

If you were going to sack him, why not do it after the team had been relegated? A new manager will not be able to buy any players till January and will take crucial time to get to know his players and how to get the best out of them. I can't say I am the biggest fan of Southgate but I can't help but feel like he has been merked by Steve Gibson.

BBC Sport can reveal that England's 2018 World Cup bid team plans to give luxury handbags to the wives of all 24 members of Fifa's voting committee.

Fifa vice-president Jack Warner took delivery of his wife's bag during a recent trip to London.

Shadow sports minister Hugh Robertson claimed the move was "a massive misjudgement" and could backfire.

England's 2018 World Cup bid team plans to give luxury handbags to the wives of the 24 members of the voting committee.

Jack Warner, a Fifa vice-president who was critical of England's bid while on a recent visit to London, took delivery of his wife's bag during that trip.

Shadow sports minister Hugh Robertson claimed the bid team had made "a massive misjudgement".

But Richard Caborn, ambassador for the bid, told BBC Sport: "We work within the rules. There is no embarrassment."

He insisted: "There are rules set down by the governing bodies, and it is about making sure we follow those rules, which we have."

However, the revelation raises questions about the integrity of the bidding process, and illustrates how the contest could become a "present frenzy", with different countries trying to outdo each other in terms of the gifts they give to the executive committee members.

606: DEBATE

The Fifa regulations are fairly vague, stipulating that "no monetary gifts of any kind of personal advantage can be provided by the bidders to Fifa or and Fifa members".

The rules are much slacker than the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regulations, which were tightened up after the Salt Lake City voting scandal.

IOC members are only allowed to accept gifts of "minimal" value and are not even allowed to visit any of the bidding cities.

In contrast, Fifa members are permitted to travel the world as much as they like, accepting chauffeur driven limousines and five star hotel accommodation from the competing countries.

Alec McGivan, who headed England's failed 2006 World Cup bid, told BBC Sport: "I think Fifa executive members are used to staying in the best hotels in the world and going to all the biggest sporting events.

"They have a luxury lifestyle really. When they turn up they expect to be well treated."

But Robertson has called on Fifa to tighten its rules ahead of what is likely to be the most competitive and high-profile contest in the history of World Cup bidding.

"If other bidding cities are doing this or worse, then Fifa needs to look at its rules as a priority and stop this kind of activity happening again in the future," he added.

The host countries for 2018 and 2022 are being decided in December 2010 and there are currently 10 different bids on the table.

That has bad idea all over it - hopefully we aren't basing our entire World Cup bid on womens handbags .... next they will be giving out spa treatments!
