After almost a week using Ubuntu, I'm pretty much a happy camper, with the exceptions described in Day 2.

  • I still haven't been able to set up my Exchange 2007 account in Evolution, despite several comments here and on Twitter. I managed to receive e-mail using IMAP, but the IMAP setup requires an SMTP server, which my ISP apparently has decided to leave out. I tried Thunderbird as well, but with the same result. I don't know if this is a general problem with the Exchange 2007-platform, and we can always hope the next generation will be better, but for now, while using Webmail works, it is not a great solution.
  • The dual screen setup is also still annoying. I got the drivers from NVIDIA installed, and am now using NVIDIA setup. A couple of notes on my setup. I use a Dell laptop, XPS M1330, with two monitors, a Dell W2407 connected via HDMI and an old IBM 17" connected via VGA. I was able to close the lid without all screens going blank, but now, whenever I restart, I have to reset the monitor setup. In other words, Ubuntu does not remember my monitor setup, and spending 5 minutes setting up my monitors every morning is enough to make me grumpy.

Now, everything else seems to be working quite nicely, but these two issues are bugging med to the extent of going back to Windows. And with Windows 7 running like a dream, with Exchange, and remembers my monitor setup, I'm running out of reasons NOT to switch to the Redmond OS.

emma, @zerocredit_uk mentioned this site to me on which of course i have advertised the http://conkertu.com event on the 28th. as a side to this i have also asked for help regarding my frontroom fireplace.

since living in the house in the last two years i have always had visions of me using the fireplace, currently it is blocked off at the bottom and i'm wondering if that is the case for it all the way to the top. I put a message out on justfortheloveofit about maybe someone that 'does' these kind of things in exchange for website/design/socialmedia work and it looks like i might have come across someone.

What is brilliant about this is this might be the first time i have done a proper skills/barter swap using technology. i have a feeling it will not be my last. exciting.

So installation of Ubuntu 9.10 in dual-boot with Windows went fine, but I did encounter some problems on my first workday. For good solutions, feel free to comment.

  • We're using Exchange 2007 for email, contacts and calendars, and I think I have tried every combination of servers and domains available in Evolution with no luck. I'm sure there is a solution, but it is certainly not easily found. This could be what makes me drop Ubuntu alltogether if there is no solution.
  • Dual screens posed quite a problem, and it's still not solved completely. I use a 24" Dell via HDMI and a 17" IBM via VGA from my laptop, and after some fiddling, I managed to get them to work. However, I can't shut the lid on the laptop without all screens going blank.
(Update: This seems to be an issue with the upgrade to 9.10: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-manager/+bug/416236. I assume it will be fixed pretty soon.)

On a positive note, installing a Dell 3115cn printer via WLAN was completed without a hitch, and OpenOffice seem to to the job so far.

More to come, have a great weekend!

With the latest iPhone OS 3.1 update, iPhones start identifying themselves correctly, and if the ActiveSync policy configured by the administrator requires device encryption (see Figure 1 below), data on the device is encrypted. That's great news— unless you happen to have an older iPhone. If you're using the (Original/Classic/2G/1G?) iPhone , or the iPhone 3G, and device encryption is required, you will be unable to log on to your mailbox.

Important to remember these days, when execs start sporting iPhones.

So I have an iPhone, a Google Calendar and a Microsoft Exchange account at work. My goal was to have all of these calendars be in sync and ultimately come together on my iPhone. One phone to rule them all!  (Sorry JRR).

Setup Exchange on iPhone
Following instuctions on Apple's Support page (http://bit.ly/27IPx) I contacted the help desk at my new employer and got required information, plugged them in and walla my calendar, contacts and email were on my iPhone.

Synchronize Exchange and Google
Next I installed Google Calendar Sync (http://bit.ly/X6gn) on my PC at work.

And set it up for 2 way sync. So now my Google calendar and Work Exchange calendar are in sync!

Configuring CalDAV on iPhone 3.1 for Primary and secondary Google Calendars
I finished by setting up CalDav for Google Calendar. Note that you can't use google sync, because it uses a MS Exchange protocol and only one ActiveSync account can be on the iPhone at a time. So you must use the CalDav method.

1. On the iphone go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars
2. Tap "Add account", scroll down to bottom and tap "other"
3. Then under calendars tap "Add CalDav Account"
4. Enter your google information
        Server: google.com
        Username: [youronecoolgoogleusername]
        Password: [youronecoolgooglepassword]
        Description: [whateveryouwant]
5. Tap "next"
6. Now should have an account with your main google calendar
7. If you want to add in a secondary google calendar, go to Google Calendar, click "Settings" at top right of screen, Select "Calendars" tab, click on the Calendar of interest to you, scroll down to bottom and find the calendar ID

OK now the tricky part. Take this ID and plug it into this URL  https://www.google.com/calendar/dav/[CalendarID]/user in place of [CalendarID]. For example:

https://www.google.com/calendar/dav/50123456LEFJOPjadlfjaj@group.calendar.google.com/user Now cut and paste that URL and email it to your iPhone. On your iPhone open that email and copy it.

Now repeat the process documented in step 4 with following changes
        Description: [nameitsomethingelse]
After you have created the account, select the newly created account. Scroll down to bottom and tap Advanced Settings.

Delete the URL that is in the Account URL section and paste the URL you copied from the email.

Should be good to go!! Now I just have to figure out how to do the same with my contacts??

As an aside, it's ironic that Apple offers Exchange support directly with OS X now, while Windows 7 users will still need to purchase a copy of Outlook to connect to their corporate email

Great post by Michael Gartenberg about just what Snow Leopard's inclusion of Exchange support means for the future.  Another of my favorite points was that a copy of Snow Leopard is cheaper than both Office for Mac and Windows 7.

I have now been in singapore for a few days, actually its already ten.

And I want to tell this story with a few pictures.

When I first arrived in Singapore Noah and I lived in a hotel, the Value Thompson Hotel whcih asked for $77 per night and offered quite a nice experience. The pool was on the rood on the seventh floor, not bad at all...

We then had to find an appartment to live here, which was quite difficult. We needed a four bedroom appartment but there are almost no affordable condos in our price range, so we were up for a challenge and had to eat some nice breakfast first :-)

After a short visit to the Uni and its huge campus, we had to clear up some administrative things, we started our search with a drink at Starbucks ;-)

Finally after a few intense days we found our condo, it is located at Regent Grove near Yew Tee. Just look at the pictures, I for one look forward to move in on the first of August.

After having found a place to live and Hendik and Michel had arrived on Friday afternoon. We went to see an outdoor ballett. Quite nice but it was abit long... The nice thing, we were just sitting on the grass and had a picnic before and during the show,

Right now the Introduction Week at the Nanyang MBa has started and I should focus again...

I was asked earlier by one of my colleagues, if there was a way to find out which users have their mail forwarded to other users. I answered no, cause I don't know of a way to do that. So, just now my colleague Thomas presented me with the answer:

get-qaduser -SizeLimit 0 -IncludedProperties altrecipient -ldapfilter '(&(mail=*)(altRecipient=*))' | Select-Object -property "name","description","altrecipient" | where {$_.altrecipient -like "*Put a name here*"}

Pretty cool :) Updated at 17:14, the powershell code was a bit too long ;)
