Janie and I spent some time at Park + Vine, Downtown Cincinnati's Green General Store, this Saturday, as part of the fun of getting out and being with other small and local businesses for Cincinnati Unchained day.

Dan Korman operates one of the most interesting and thoughtfully presented retail shops in the region. On one of the post cards that advertise Park + Vine it's called a Green General Store.

Green it is, with natural, recycled, organic and vegan products ranging from foods to apothecary to books, utensils, bags and more.

General it is, too, though, and that's something we don't see much, anywhere anymore.

Customers of Park + Vine come in to buy canning equipment, art, clothing, bicycle gear, non-toxic paints and other home improvement goodies, infant & child products, natural remedies, soaps, lotions, supplements, cold food & drinks, boxed food, snacks, shoes, socks, stationery, cook books and gifts of many kinds.

Another outstanding offering of Park + Vine is a selection of almost every kind of Sigg / Klean Kanteen / etc. water bottle a person could ever want (and a variety of caps, too).

Oh, and like any General Store worth its neighborhood salt, it supports and sponsors many other local organizations and has the kind of local brochures, cards, newsletters and other materials available that we'd expect from store central to its community. Park + Vine has a fairly large vendor list, as well, maintaining relationships with many suppliers and manufacturers, instead of taking the easier but less engaged way of contracting with a very small number of wholesalers for the range of desired products.

It's a place that feels loved and appreciated by the people who come through the door and that's a bright and different feeling in shopping today.

We hung out a while,  bought some stuff, took some pictures and had a fine time of it.

"Pleas do not stay here — Bed Bugs!!!" (9/28/09)

Please do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else. I stayed one night (had paid cash in advance for 10 nights) was bit all over my body by bed bugs. Upon inspection bedbug casings were under the mattress, and bedbug poo stains were all over the mattress. The sheets were clean upon arrival, but when I woke up there were a couple of streaks on them and now I know they were my blood from the bed bugs.

I called the health board and the woman told me she's been getting complaints about bedbugs in this hotel for over 2 years.

I only gave this hotel a star because I had to in order to submit my review, TRUST ME - it does not deserve any stars. The worst part is the bed bugs may have gotten into my things and I could infest other places, even my home. Look online to learn how to check for bed bugs & always check before you pay, even at expensive hotels.

I am super itchy alll over, look like a freak, and am so traumatized that I feel dirty, can't sleep, and when I do I have nightmares. This is what staying here will get you. P.S. They refused to refund me any of my money (they have a no refunds policy at this stink hole) and they say I agreed to the room, which is true - the room NOT the bedbugs!!!

"Welcome to Hell" (1/27/09)

Ha! Remeber the last time you told somebody to 'go to hell' ? You might as well had sent them to Bay Street Motel...

I can't believe that they actually charge you to stay there.... I would not stay there even if somebody would pay me lots of money to do so. I soo wish I 'd read the reviews for this deep hole before making a mistake of booking a room there....

And now to the 'good' stuff. I arrived at the motel on Friday, well after 7 pm. I was so excited to find out that it is so close to the bus station. It was freezing and I was quite tired after a long bus drive. I entered the reception and right away I noticed that the place looks rather run down. This did not deter me from proceeding to book a room for two nights (oh, lordy!) as my expectations were already low due to the cheap price of the place. All I wanted was a bed to sleep on and a shower.

The man at the reception showed me to my room on the 2nd floor. There was nothing there but the bed and a desk with a tv on it. There was also a sink there in the corner. I didn't take a good look at the room although I was majorly let down by the poor condition of everything inside. Since I was in a hurry as I was meeting someone downtown I left my bag on the floor in the room and I left. I came back around 10 pm and I opened the door, sat down on the dirty looking bed and had a first good look about the room. There was a weird musty sweet odor in the room, which I was about to discover is a tell-tale sign of bed bug infestation.I looked around the ugly orange walls of the dimly lit place and I started to panic as I was quickly realizing that I made a huge mistake by staying in that place.

Just when I thought that things can't get any worse they did! My neighbors got it on and I could hear every noise they made through the wall!!! It was very disturbing and I was horrified and disgusted. I quickly turned the tv on and sat on the bed still in my jacket as I had no intention of taking it off to sleep. Sitting on the bed I heard the sound a plastic foil makes when it is hit by wind and to my horror I discovered that there is no glass in the window frame! My room had plastic foil instead!

Then I noticed that there is some kind of an insect crawling in my direction on the bed and looking at it I knew that it had no good intentions.... I've never seen a bed bug before but I've heard of them and I knew instantly that I have to get out of there in that very minute. BUT!!! if only it was so easy... I grabbed my bag and turned the little knob in the door handle to open the door and.... it broke! I got trapped in that room! I've felt my hair stand on my head from fear that I will be trapped there for the rest of the night. Of course there was no phone in the room. I thought about screaming but I figured that with the shady business that was going in the next room I don't want to attract any unwanted attention... Luckily I had the number of the motel written down and my I used my cell phone to call the reception.... to no avail! No one was picking up for several minutes! I thought I am in some horror movie! Then finally the guy at the reception picked up only to come to my room and declare from behind the closed door that the 2nd key he had to the room is not working!!!!Then he told me to slide my key through a 5 cm in diameter hole in my door!!! I didn;t like that idea in the least but i had no choice but to trust him and I gave him my key through that hole. He finally opened the door and I immediately told him that I want my money back. He was not happy and asked why and I went on a rant and I guess I was persuasive enough because he gave me all my money back. I went into the street at 11:45 pm in downtown Toronto. It was so cold and I was so upset that I got back on the first bus back home.

"Worst Ever!" (5/21/06)

This place is one of the worst place to stay on earth. I may be exaterating, but it may be true. This place is not even a motel. It's a drug addict and prostitude's home.

In every floor there is only one bathroom for everyone to share.
our first floor was the worst. there is a sink in the middle of the hallway for us to use.
The shower was broken and spelled out the problems wrong because it was owned by non speaking english chinese.

My room number was written in pen and had only one double sized bed and a 10" TV.
There was no room for any other activities. the ceiling top was opened and linked with the ceiling of the bathroom. being able to listen to everything in the shared bathroom and also smell it. It was the worst ever.

the lights didn't even turn on. toilet was not working. only shower on the third floor was working and it looked like a haunted house.

DON"T GO TO THIS PLACE. ITS THE WORST.

Today we are going to switch gears a little bit and talk about property auctions in South Carolina. We've mentioned auction properties in Charleston before, but today we will talk about the process.  My first and most important piece of advice is to take a qualified professional with you in order to inspect any property which you plan to purchase at auction.  I cannot stress this enough-not only because I happen to be such a professional but because I have personally witnessed many unfortunate situations where an enthusiastic buyer purchased a property without inspection and lets just say it can get costly.  Secondly, know your maximum price you are willing to pay before you get to the auction. This tip works very well when considering this third piece of advice-leave your emotions at the door.

Whether you are in need of a real estate professional in South Carolina or an inspection professional, you've found both here.  With over 20 years experience in this industry, I could bring a lot of valuable information to the table. Feel free to contact me if you are in need of assistance. Speaking of valuable information, take a look at a couple property auction documents I have waiting for you after the jump.
