MMR's new sister label Ghetto Quietly launches in Dublin this weekend with a rock solid line up of Prince Kong, Bluefood and A-Force peddling their sonic wares along with various MCs.

Prince Kong's 'Proper Horror Show' on 2 x 12 inch vinyl will be the label's first release and expect much of the material from this release to feature in Kong's set.

Dublin based Ghetto Quietly will concentrate on limited runs of vinyl for local artists... thus far: Prince Kong, Bluefood and A-Force. Expect GQ vinyls to coincide roughly with MMR digital download releases for these Irish artists.

Perhaps not so much a sister label as a bastard cousin.. the one your Mom never wanted you to hang out with as they were from the wrong side of the tracks!

A cool, weird thing happened last Tuesday here in L.A.  Thomas Bangalter, one half of the electro duo in Daft Punk, did a three song DJ set at Cinespace in Hollywood.  This sent a huge shockwave across since the Daft Punkers have never been seen outside of their robotic helmets.  So what did that he look like?  How about this:

Looks pretty much like a French club DJ.  Hmm...

Ok, it's kind of unusual that this is how he chose to reveal his identity for the first time but honestly, clubsters, is it really that big a deal?  What did you expect him to look like?  It's not like he's Samus in Metroid and is actually a woman.  (Oh Lord, I just flashed my nerd badge!)  If he pulled off his helmet and it was just a hamster on a spinning wheel THEN I'd be surprised.  But, nope... just a French hipster dude.

On that note, it's cool for me because he did at a place where my film once played last year.  Makes me feel like part of the game.  Anyway...

Looks like he was "human" after all, am I right, people?!?!  (Nerd hat fully on now)  From their 2005 album of the same name:

Totally crazy to go to a concert alone?

Or totally awesome?

Never even imagined it until tonight.

I had imagined going to an imaginary local bar down the street from my imaginary apartment in an imaginary city on the imaginary night on which the imaginary neighborhood DJ plays music I love and dancing like an imaginary lunatic.

But concerts are significantly different from mixed music for me.  Impossible for me to dance completely alone at a concert.  I'm always dancing with the band.  Whether they know it or not.  Which they almost definitely don't.  Unless they're the kind of band that's always dancing with all the serious dancers in the crowd.  Whether they can identify us or not.  Which is the kind of band to be.

Anyway, Mason Jennings is playing tomorrow night at my favorite venue ever.  And I'm tempted.

Butterfly is track 2 on Mason Jennings.

Coachella - Friday, 4.17.09 part 1

Ah, the outdoor music festival.  You know how it is... The hot sun beating down on you promising a sunburn.  The numb legs from standing in the crowd all day.  The porta-potties that can only be described as "violent".  Being raped by the tripled prices of the vendors for food that doesn't even fill you up.  Overhearing the painfully bad jokes and conversation of your peers in the crowd as you wait for the band to start.  The path through the crowd having the uncanny knack to be right where you're standing all the time.

After a while you begin to think "I missed the opening of Crank: High Voltage for this?" (Okay, only I would think that, but you get the point)

But then the music starts and everything is worth it.

I arrived at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival the night before, camping out on the grounds next to the venue.  I had been to Coachella only once before in 2007 for one day, but I loved the experience.  This time I was going alone and devoting myself wholly to seeing all the bands I could.

The benefit of sleeping right next door is you're able to enter immediately and take in everyone from the start of the day, and to begin I devoted the first half of my day to DJs and electronica.

The first performer I saw was Switch, a house music DJ from the UK.  I had not heard of Switch prior to this but I was definitely entertained during his unusually long hour and a half set.  He kept the crowd hopping the entire time which is impressive for someone in the starting gate slot.

Switch was to be followed by Craze & Klever, but for some reason they cancelled and it was left unannounced.  The more I wait, the less I care, so when what I thought was Craze & Klever starting 45 minutes late I had written them off.  It's unfortunate because I would later learn I was actually hearing Gui Boratto, a Brazilian electronica performer I had earmarked to checkout.  Listening halfheartedly I do recall thinking "They're not bad.."  Opportunity missed.

Festivals like this are all about those pleasant little surprises that happen along the way and my first was seeing Steve Aoki.  Aoki's name is part of the fabric of Los Angeles club culture but that's a world I'm not fully steeped into.  This was my first chance to see what he was all about.

Aoki and his entourage really put on a show, complete with a Chinese dragon, crowd surfing on rafts, super soakers, and a T-shirt gun.  I found myself jumping with the crowd throughout and kicking myself for not checking out Aoki previously.  Excellent show, enough that I'll forgive the fact that at one point all he did was essentially do karaoke to Rage Against The Machine's Killing In The Name.

Next was the reason I had staked out the Sahara tent in the first place:  Felix Da Housecat.  I had fallen in love with FDHC with the release of the Devon Dazzle & The Neon Fever album, a fantastic group of electroclash originals.  I knew his time there was for a DJ set but I was prepared and with proper timing he and Steve Aoki were able to switch positions without losing a beat, keeping the crowd moving.

Man, I love FDHC!  He started the set remixing MGMT's Kids, my favorite track last year, and ended it getting the crowd wild with a rousing mix of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit that reminded everyone how special that song was.  Fantastic!

I took the time to grab a little something to eat and headed back in time to catch Crystal Castles set.  Word had been going around that the Castles sets are often disastrous, incomplete, or just plain called off altogether so as I waited for them to appear I held my breath.  My fears turned out to be unfounded.  The Crystal Castles delivered a set that was both ferocious and confrontational and confirmed in me what I had been thinking over the past year:  Electronica is the new punk.

Singer Alice Glass threw herself into convulsions back and forth across the stage, screaming as Ethan Kath and their tour drummer drove it all home.  It sent shivers down my back!

Unfortunately, it was a performance I had to cut short in order to catch Mr. Leonard Cohen, but that's for tomorrow.  Regardless, a great start!

Today I am posting the song What She Wants off the aforementioned Devon Dazzle & The Neon Fever album by Felix Da Housecat.  The song features James Murphy, he of LCD Soundsystem fame.  Upon the album's release LCD had yet to release their debut album and had only a handful of singles and compilation appearances.  Murphy's appearance at this time only proves that Felix has his finger on the pulse of music's future.  Till tomorrow...
