It's December so let's kick it off with my final Sparks track of the year.  And yes, I fulfilled my own promise to post a new Sparks track once per month this year.

I finally caught up with the Mael brothers new release The Seduction Of Ingmar Bergman, a musical commissioned by Swedish radio this year.  The chosen release was interesting.  The album was released on vinyl only in stores and digitally through iTunes.  My record player barely works (something is screwy with the output) so this marks the first time I've ever bought a complete album digitally.  Only Sparks could make me do that.

I'm not sure why but I went in with low expectations, thinking it would be a random stop in their career with interesting moments.  What it is is actually pretty fantastic.  It's a proper musical and rather remarkable, even for Swedish radio, that they chose Ingmar Bergman as their subject since he was the ultimate art house director.  Bergman was responsible for a multitude of excellent films, including the famous The Seventh Seal, plus Wild Strawberries and Winter Light, to name two of my personal favorites.  The whole musical follows Bergman's trip to Hollywood after winning the Cannes Film Festival in 1955 for Smiles Of A Summer Night and his decision not to corrupt his integrity as the studios beckon.  It's a fun yet deep production that lingers with me after each listen.

While it's best experienced as a whole I'm giving you the song "Mr. Bergman, How Are You?" today as a small sample of the overall product.  Enjoy this for today but do yourself a favor and check out the entire project sometime.  Excellent!

The anticipated growth of internet-enabled TVs in the next four years would likely increase the popularity of digitally downloaded movies, TV shows and video games while dampening sales related to DVDs, blu-ray discs, video game discs, and other physical content formats. According to USA Weekend, several major TV manufacturers already have or will soon have internet-enabled TVs on the market.

While internet-enabled TVs are only expected to account for about 3% of TV sales this year, research firm Parks Associates estimates that they will represent 24% of TV sales by 2013. Companies including LG, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony and Toshiba now or reportedly plan to offer internet-enabled TVs, at a starting price point of around $1,500 USD.

So 24% of TVs sold by 2013 will be web-connected and may enable high-quality streaming of TV content on demand. How will operators (Comcast, DirecTV, Dish, Verizon, Time Warner Cable, etc.) battle this? And what does it mean for emerging iTV standards like EBIF and tru2way?

The labels are attempting to revive the multi-track album format with new software that packages songs, traditional album liner notes, music videos, and other interactive extras as part of a premium-priced package.

As industries become increasingly digitized, you'll see more heavyweights battle it out to be the preferred platform for accessing content, in this case music. Apple's tablet strategy appears to be a move (in part) to capitalize on the netbook craze. But in true Apple style it wants to create its own version of the expanded album format. I could see an easy transition for much of Apple's install base of music-hungry consumers and early adopters obsessed with other devices like the iPhone. Expect to hear something from Redmond soon.

I'd love something that brings together Songza, Last.fm and Pandora-type features..
