Here are posterous posts filed under developers...

I wrote this back in 2004 while living in Australia. It was published in CNet's Builder AU. Though my views have changed a bit on several of the points I made herein, and I also now dislike some of the arguments I made from a quality standpoint, I do think my underlying point was valid.

In the war of words between open source advocates and opponents, a common refrain can often be heard from the opposition: "Open Source is not sustainable, because you cannot expect people to work for free forever."

Though their argument is not always applicable, they do have a point. Expecting an entire industry to grow and flourish based almost entirely upon donated time is a bit Communist in its expectation of altruism. In a recent talk called "The Open Source Triple Play" given by Michael Tiemann, Vice President of Open Source Affairs at Red Hat, Inc., it is pointed out that more than 90% of open source developers are employed as proprietary software programmers. This tells us that for most, including myself, writing open source software is done "after hours" in a hobby environment.

Read: It's like we're holding down two jobs.

Of course, that assumes the developers put equal time into both activities, which is unlikely. In the event of any sort of financial or familial disaster, which activity do you think would be the first to be removed from the developer's schedule? Obviously the hobby would.

I'm sure this will raise the ire of many a reader, who will point to successful open source companies and projects like Linux that are huge but were done in that same free time, but such an irate reader will be missing the bigger point I'm making. We all know that hobbyists can create amazing software. We know that because it's been done. What we should be striving for, though, is a software development environment in which those same developers can do exactly what they love, with exactly the same quality, and not have to hold down another job as well.

Is there anybody out there, FOSS devotee or otherwise, who honestly believes that if these developers could focus more of their time on their open source projects that the world would be worse off?

Hear me loud and clear: OPEN SOURCE DEVELOPERS DESERVE TO BE PAID. Cash money. In our pocket. Today. Yesterday! Even in a Socialist system, the individual is expected to be able to survive as a result of their contributed work. What sort of system are we building here? A development environment where writing software is like playing Dungeons & Dragons (that is, done mainly by "academic individualists" late at night for fun and no pay)? It's anti-economic intellectual onanism at best, and at worst, a system that makes the most inspired contributors suffer at the hands of Capitalist "daytime owners".

It's all quite tricky in the current environment, in which open source projects are started as grassroots efforts, usually completely unfunded, and perhaps even misguided. Where is the money to pay developers supposed to come from? What happens when the project dies?

I have a proposal. It can be done with existing technology, requiring only a bit more software development to build the infrastructure, and perhaps some legal personnel to make sure everything is fair. I call it "Pay Per Useful Contribution".

The specifics could be determined on a project-by-project basis, but the general idea is that any developer can contribute to any project, just like today, but projects would offer a payment mechanism based on some metric, such as "Number of Source Files Contributed" or "Number of Lines of Code Contributed". This metric value would be applied to a multiplier, and a contributor's score would directly determine his or her payment. Payments would be generated from either a pre-existing pool of cash (if available) or as proportionate percentages of income from eventual sales of the product.

For example: "UltraSoft's BigEngine Project" pays on a per-line basis. Bob Olsen contributes 1000 lines of code to the project, and Kelly Jones contributes 500 lines of code. 200 of Kelly's 500 lines, though, replaced some of Bob's, and this was appro ved by all parties. In the end, Bob has 800 Line Credits, and Kelly has 500. This means the total Line Credits are 1300, of which Bob has 61.5%, and of which Kelly has 38.5%. When the product ships, it has $10,000 of sales in the first week. Assuming there were no other developers involved, Bob would take home $6150, and Kelly $3850.

If you create value, you should be paid based on how much value you create.

Of course I've simplified the idea for this article, but it's only meant to be food for thought. Developers in the open source community need something like this. Desperately. It would not only encourage more contributions to open source projects, but would tend to encourage customer relationships (to increase income) and many of the other benefits of Capitalism.

And of course, it would let us stop holding down two jobs. Then we'd have more time for…Dungeons & Dragons???

i am sick of all those iphone app developers whining and bitching about apple’s app approval process. if you hate it so much, go to the pre app store or open your own. but honestly i bet you are making too much money through the app store.

and to people like paul graham, please give me a break:

How did Apple get into this mess? Their fundamental problem is that they don’t understand software. They treat iPhone apps the way they treat the music they sell through iTunes. Apple is the channel; they own the user; if you want to reach users, you do it on their terms. The record labels agreed, reluctantly. But this model doesn’t work for software. It doesn’t work for an intermediary to own the user. The software business learned that in the early 1980s, when companies like VisiCorp showed that although the words “software” and “publisher” fit together, the underlying concepts don’t. Software isn’t like music or books. It’s too complicated for a third party to act as an intermediary between developer and user. If software publishing didn’t work in 1980, it works even less now that software development has evolved from a small number of big releases to a constant stream of small ones. But Apple doesn’t understand that either. Their model of product development derives from hardware. They work on something till they think it’s finished, then they release it.

so apple doesn’t get the software business. the reason paul give is that apple creates complete products that work, rather than ones that a broken, and now apple is the bad guy because they demand apps that work rather than are beta works in progress. maybe the software industry is broken? maybe the way software is made and sold should change from a model of trial and error to a more or less finished product. oh, i hear you developers scream, code is so complicated. well tell that to nasa, i bet they make sure that both the hardware and software that they use to send people into space works, rather than using beta crap. cars usually when you get them from a dealer work. so do mobile phones. i used to have nokia phones that also have software on them that didn’t crash for years on end.

so please all you developers out there whining about the app store that is making you a ton of money that didn’t exist a couple of years ago … why instead of whining spend the time on creating good code.

Wow! we did not anticipate that our distribution graph would generate such a huge echo on the media and blogosphere - from ReadWriteWeb to PCWorld. We felt compelled to follow up with some thoughts.

We'd like to bring some clarity on the confusion that our data has spread over many blog readers out there

  • The 80%/20% rule is pretty universal to start with, and it’s no surprise to find it here again
  • 80% does NOT correspond to the number of apps that are not downloaded, but rather corresponds to the number of apps either not downloaded nor kept on the iPhone (eg i download something and uninstalled it). The difference is important (although we suspect not huge in %)
  • It does not mean 80% of the apps are Crapps (self expression), or unused (we don t measure usage) it means that most of the apps are not found.
  • Does that mean you can't make a buck by being in the long tail? No. For example we have discovered that with the right pricing some apps with a few thousands install can make some very nice money. It depends what your ambition is, and how useful your app is
  • Because it will always come down to that: a useless app has indeed very little chance to make it. And in those 80% there are some. let's not be blind. Users can spot them and sanction them
  • Useful yet poorly marketed apps will also fail : wrong pricing, wrong merchandising, wrong promotion, wrong pre-appstore teasing....
  • Timeline: we don't have the data and maybe other app analytics company (or Apple) could help with that, but in those 80% some apps have been launched and either not updated, or simply discontinued. We're not sure which part of the cake we're talking about, but definitely some apps are counted in cumulated and should not be included. Let’s not forget that a bunch of pre-3.0 apps no longer work on most devices; apps that were already in the long tail in the 2.x days have sank deeper by now.
  • Actually what really matters is the number of apps that are actively maintained. It is definitely NOT 100k
  • Our sample is composed of a few thousands users: yes we are a young service, and yes our sample is biased. We fully disclose that fact. But bear in mind that most if not all iPhone research that are published out there are based on similar if not smaller sample size that are extrapolated. Here we save the extrapolation because we give you 100% real data of what is actually installed on people's iPhone. (and not the apps that are sitting idle in the iTunes library)
  • We count on the intelligence and sense of judgement from readers and bloggers to understand the context of that data. Like we said in a comment to one of our reader: what matters is not so much the data at a precise moment, but the trend over time.
  • This is why we 'll publish regularly an update of this data set so we'll see how right,or wrong we were.
  • Btw the graph looks a bit different if you double click on it by category. We'll release soon data going in that direction.
  • Our observation is that as we grow and progress it is harder to detect new apps installed and we are confident that the 20/80 rule will apply in the future
  • What matter is the rotation of those 20k. It is easy to understand how this will change over time. New great apps will come and replace some others.

Bottom Line: While a few posts using our data conclude that it is not worth trying your way in the app store, we believe this is precisely the opposite. In fact, more than ever, there is a growing need for great if not awesome apps. Plenty of room there! As far as we are concerned, there is a massive potential to re establish some equilibrium with the way people find and install apps (worth having). A few startups and big companies are currently working on solving that issue.

AppsFire is one of them.

It's no secret that Palm's been taking it niiiice 'n slow with their app strategy, whatever it is. Here's their next baby step: Ares, a browser-based, drag-and-drop development toolkit for making simple apps. It's a marginally good idea!

In a way, software written in Ares is the purest kind of web app: It's designed in a browser, written in web languages and rendered like a webpage. In another, it's not, because the tools packages these things like native apps. As weirdly hybrid as the results are, Palm reasoning is straightforward: They want to "help Web developers make the leap to becoming mobile developers." You know, by making web development into app development, even moreso that webOS and the Mojo SDK already do. Ok!

The tool

Engaging developers in Open Source projects

Last Friday I attended a workshop hosted by OSS Watch on Engaging Developers with Open Source Projects.

The workshop offered several different perspectives on Open Source projects - from an OSS project, from a project consuming libraries and other outputs of OSS projects, and from a developer submitting their first patch. This was a nice mix, and it was good to see the process from different viewpoints.

My presentation was primarily from the OSS project end, and focussed on Wookie:

I think the main thing I was trying to convey is how from a project perspective you're (usually) keen to get external contributions, no matter how small, and how willing project team members are to help get people involved. My "being nice is a survival strategy in OSS" seemed to go down well as a takeaway message!

Ian Boston was next up and talked about how Sakai works with Open Source projects - I think the point he makes about "good code - bad community vs. bad code - good community" is an excellent one. Perhaps one of the reasons why Moodle is so successful with its community are the wide range of issues that users can readily tackle themselves - whereas something very mature and well designed like Apache Commons makes developers averse to touching anything!

The last talk was by Mark Johnson, and was all about submitting a one-line patch to Moodle. This was a really nice walk-through from identifying a problem, engaging with the community, to getting the fix accepted, and with a clear case as to why the college would want to support this activity.

The discussions around the workshop also threw up some interesting issues. One of the big ones would seem to be that the core processes that developers have to engage in - particularly in Open Source projects, but in commercial development, too - are often also not taught in programming courses, namely source control and issue trackers. This is one of the hurdles for bringing on relatively new developers into a mature project. On the other hand it could be argued that Open Source projects provides a very useful training ground for developing the skills of using these systems, which translates well into other developer roles.

Another issue that comes up a lot is sustainability, especially in relation to funded programmes, I think we're making a lot of progress on this one, and at least now sustainability is something that projects funded by JISC have to consider. However its still not quite right, and there are probably things we can do to try to keep a good balance of innovation and sustainability where there is central funding for software development.

OSS Watch are a JISC innovation support centre; and they are focussed on Open Source in education. Find out more at http://www.oss-watch.ac.uk/.
