Death Cab for Cutie has a brand new song Meet Me on the Equinox which kicks off the new Twilight (New Moon) movie soundtrack. Caught myself doing a double-take the other day when I watched the video for it. OMG! Did DCFC hire a new singer or is that the newly trim, made-over and handsome Ben Gibbard?! Fear not, Ben's signature nasal twang remains distinctive and is clearly unmistakable on this track, so there is no confusion.

Ben Gibbard also made his big screen debut in John Krasinski's Brief Interviews With Hideous Men. This proves to be an interesting before and after contrast of Ben since getting married. Looks like being married to Zooey Deschanel must be doing incredible wonders for Mr. Gibbard.

...and Jeff Tweedy and Will Sheff.

I installed the last.fm Scrobbler yesterday and it charted my iTunes listening habits. I was not entirely surprised at the top 3, Death Cab For Cutie, Wilco and Okkervil River.

What did surprise me was how far out in front Death Cab were, and how far ahead the top 3 were over everyone else.

And wow, I sure like Heavy Metal Drummer.

“Transatlanticism” by Death Cab For Cutie

The kind of song to put on in the car when you have to do some thinking and need eight minutes of unobtrusive music to keep focused. I love the last couple minutes of the song.

Thought I'd end this month with an admission:  I'm a failed hipster... HAPPILY.  There's a bar here in Los Angeles called the Cha-Cha Lounge where you see people like this:  http://www.latfh.com/  You'd have to drag me kicking and screaming to that place.

People try to claim I'm a hipster.  Sorry, NO.  I dress like a regular guy and not in these weird colorful fashions, ironic T-shirts from thrift stores, and American Apparel clothing.  I don't have a tattoo, nor do I find them particularly attractive, which makes living in L.A. difficult.  I would never drink Pabst aka Hipster Juice, the piss-water of beers.  I can't fathom a need to wear a scarf here in sunny L.A. like they prefer to do.  I know film because I want to be a filmmaker, but I reference and love for a movie like Now, Voyager rather than Eraserhead or John Waters, and I love studio and independent films equally.  I'm an obsessive music fan who digs deep into the past and genuinely loves a band because it's good rather than because I'm supposed to.  And when it comes to the coolest, hippest bands right now?  I'm completely in the dark.  Losing my edge, indeed.

Just because a hipster likes a band doesn't make it bad or a flavor of the month.  So I'm in Amoeba a couple months ago and I decide "Y'know... I'm going to impulse buy this band Art BrutFrank Black produced the new album... Why not?  Let's do this!"  I bought the album, put it on, and two songs in I screamed inside "Get this out of my ears IMMEDIATELY!"  Maybe one of the worst things I've heard in a while with the most excruciating vocals.  Kill me now and kill me hard!

How behind am I?  I only really started getting into The White Stripes and Jack White's offshoot bands recently.  Still don't own a single album but it's coming and will happen sometime soon.  Pretty bad, huh?  I'm constantly hearing "You like music and you've never heard/don't like (blank)?!?!"  No, I don't/haven't.  Some publications are putting together their albums/tracks of the past decade list already (...really?) and I look over it and realize how out of it I am.

So, to explain why you haven't heard some bands on this blog and/or never will here's a handy list by category:

Admittedly... Never heard them yet:
Fleet Foxes, Deerhunter, Panda Bear, Band Of Horses, Of Montreal, Grizzly Bear
(apparently I have an aversion to animal-named bands)

Respect and admire, even though they do nothing for me:
The Flaming Lips, Wilco, Radiohead

Keep thinking I should like them but they haven't hooked into me yet:
TV On The Radio, Animal Collective, The Hold Steady

Enjoy a couple songs but after that they bore me:
Interpol, The Arcade Fire, Franz Ferdinand, The Shins, Bloc Party, Artic Monkeys

Sorry, kids, never gonna happen:
Weezer, Built To Spill, Sufjan Stevens, Modest Mouse, Spoon, The Strokes, Vampire Weekend, The Postal Service

Not sure why ANYONE likes them:
Death Cab For Cutie, The Killers, Jimmy Eat World

So there you go.  Did I miss anyone?  I'd say not being a fan of Radiohead or Arcade Fire makes me a rather spectacular failure.  And I'll also say that at some point I could change my mind on any of these bands once I hear a track that makes me finally "get it" (although not in the final two categories).  I have a sneaking suspicion Of Montreal may break from the pack and The Hold Steady's Springsteen influence is becoming increasingly attractive.

In the end I'm just looking for something that made me feel like I do when I hear The Stooges... Mission Of Burma... The Fall...  I felt that way when I heard the old Detroit punk band Death a couple months ago for the first time.  It was excellent and after that all those bands in that list above just couldn't compare.

I can only love what I love.  And I love LCD Soundsystem.  Coolest of the cool?  Check.  But that doesn't make a person a hipster because I can't understand why they're not rubbing shoulders with Kayne West and Coldplay on the charts.  Who can't love this band?  And God Bless James Murphy for releasing the ultimate anti-hipster song Losing My Edge as the starter-pistol for his first single.

Music reviews coming up. (And mostly albums you really shouldn't buy because overall aren't worth it.)

First, Throw Me The Statue's second album (first I've ever heard) Creaturesque. They're four dudes from Seattle, and I've read a couple of reviewers who've compared them to the likes to Death Cab. I get that, sort of. The music is really pop, and sort of eclectic with the instruments (is that a xylophone I hear often...?). The lead singer's voice is easy-going and pretty enough. (I'm assuming the lead singer is Scott Reitherman, but I can't be sure. After checking out their band website, their myspace, and wikipedia, I know the names of the guys, but not how they all contribute. Reitherman formed the band, and is always listed first in a group, so I'll just assume that's who's crooning. If not, then I blame the band's poor information.)

This is the first cd in a couple of weeks that I've picked up and really liked. It's one I can listen to for the quiet melodies and simple lyrics. Essentially, if I can sing along to an album, I'm going to be far more likely to enjoy it, and I can do that with Creaturesque. But, it gets bland, so you've been forewarned. Recommended starter track: "Noises."

Next, Drug Rug's Paint the Fence Invisible. Alright, so we know my resistance to female voices. I think they've got like, four or five band members. But the most notable are the dude and the chick who sing. They sing just about every single fucking song together at the same time. Honestly, if she'd shut up they'd be better. I don't need two people singing all of the time. However, that said, the definite stand out track is "Hannah, Please," which features the girl by herself. In this track, and this track only, she sounds like the baby sister of Karen O. BUT, no other song on the album sounds like this one. Epic fail on their part. Other more Drug Ruggy track is "Coffee in the Morning," where they remind me a little of The Shins. Overall, I won't be buying another cd from these guys, but hey, I'll listen to the one I've now got.

And now, Fruit Bats' The Ruminant Band. After the first two mostly dull bands I've got above this one, these guys have got a little more meat on their bones. Singer Eric Johnson's got one of those unique-but-not-unique voices. You know. It's weird-sounding, but it sounds like every other weird-sounding singer's voice. These guys heart that singer songwriter vibe, and they like mixing in those country beats. I don't think many people are going to particularly like this album. It's certainly no where near my favorite. But it's fun to have. Try out "Feather Bed."

And wooooo guilty pleasure This Providence's Who Are You Now? I totally love this cd, and I'm not afraid to admit it. AND they're a Christian band! Or something like that. But really, you wouldn't know. These fellas are peppy and fun. The music's full and dancy. And, point for them, I get to sing along. They have a few pussy moments, but overall, I like 'em anyway. The album is pretty solid, no real down points. These guys could easily be a radio band if enough people get in line. Especially their most catchy beat, "Letdown." Anyway, if you're feeling poppy, check them out.

(Lastly, Modest Mouse's new album No One's First, and You're Next is still Modest Mouse. That's all.)

So, fresh music to talk about.

First off the bat, Owl City's Ocean Eyes. Now, until the release of this album, I'd never in my life heard of this band, aka one dude with computer equipment (Sidenote: why do one person bands have a band name? Is it too much to ask just to go by "Adam Young"?). But I gave him a go, and the results are pretty alright.

Immediately, Young's voice reminded me of Ben Gibbard. Actually, the whole cd makes me think that it's something Death Cab would have put out if they had been making cds in middle school. And if they kind of hearted techno beats.

Some of the lyrics slay me, though. Because they're so oddly immature. One track is devoted to a visit to the dentist and sports this quirky preteen stanza:

"Golf and alcohol don't mix
And that's why I don't drink and drive.
Because, good grief, I'd knock out my teeth
And have to kiss my smile goodbye."

Ohhhhh the terrible wordplay! But anyway. If nothing else, it's something fun to listen to for a while. And actually, my favorite track on the entire album is the "Hello Seattle" remix, where Young cuts all the lyrics except "Hello, Seattle" and pumps us up with some beats.

On the other side of the musical world, we've got Mos Def's The Ecstatic. I haven't had the chance to spin this one as much as I've had with Owl City, but I'm pretty okay with it, too. The only difference being that, by the last few songs, I was already pretty much over the experience. Owl City kept me listening, if for nothing else, just to hear what crackpot craziness he might sing about next. But Mos Def started to bore me with how similar all of his songs sounded.

Though he did catch me pleasantly off guard immediately with "Super Magic," where he rushed through what sounds like, according to the lyrics online, "super magic black origin freshly out of dopeness" in an effort to make it sound like supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. And he pulls it off. Kudos, man. KU dos. I'm also loving "Quiet Dog," but I have no good reason for it.

In singles news, I'm CRAZY about Shakira's new jam, "She Wolf." It's so bizarre and completely un-Shakira-like. I love the throwback 80's vibe to it, mixed with the club beats. Also reminds me of the three wolf moon shirt. Aaaaaooooooooh!

I've also got Juliette Lewis's new track on the playlist pretty heavy. I'm looking forward to hearing what else she's got coming. I've always had a little thing for her, and she's doing a pretty good job of keeping that alive for me. But hopefully the rest of the album pulls through a little more. She can do better.

I love updating my music collection. It feels so refreshing, kind of like when you're about to start out on a hiking trail or something. You're just thinking about all the things you're going to run into, all the stuff you'll discover, and how you really should have worn jeans to avoid the inevitable scratches.

And speaking of musical scratches, wtf Spoon? The crappy EP you put out (which I heard you only did so as to appease your impatient ass fans) pisses me off. What is it with you guys? Going all Death Cab on us by slamming out your horrible new music.

Placebo's new jams are bugging me a little, too. The music is straight up Placebo, but Molko's voice is really effed up. He sounds kind of terrible in more than one spot. Like, they didn't spend enough money in the editing room to clean him up a little. Sour notes are killer, especially on a damn cd.

And I'm not going to lie. I've got some real love for Madcon, and I'm hoping it works out for them (Really, guys, you are the first thing I choose, but the last thing I need). But their new digital EP sounds so much like "Beggin'." Every song. Though, don't get me wrong. It's a song I like. So having it four times over is sort of acceptable. The Michael Cera of bands?

But on a good note, holy crow I'm loving Phoenix's Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. It's super fresh and clean sounding. Feel good rock. And unlike Molko, I'm adoring Mars' vocals. He's super breezy sounding.

And my current dorky jam of the moment? LMFAO's Yes. It's all kinds of stupid and awesome.

And, because I can, a brat pack mashup to Phoenix's "Lisztomania":
