Sorry I didn't get a change to post something on Thursday. I got caught up playing Madden 2010 with my brother. We spend hours and hours playing Franchise mode with our fantasy teams. Of course I win all the time. Here's the rundown for the past two days:

Day 4: Friday I got invited to speak at an event in DC and then I headed over to my friend's hotel to kick back and watch the Cavaliers game. They are pretty sick! I can't believe Noah tried to talk smack to Lebron, what was he thinking? C'MON SON!

Day 5: It's snowing in the DMV, I'm not even lying. Look at this picture:

props to my friend Joey Tajzai for the picture! Thanks bro

It's pretty crazy because my friend Boby and I were talking about this yesterday and I thought it was way too warm for it to snow. I was wrong! I don't get to say that many times. Enjoy the snow and the weekend. Have a safe one see you Sunday.

P.S. My predicted winners today Florida, Tennessee, and Pitt.

Yeah, don't want to see a firetruck at full strobe in front of your house when you drive up. Got my heart out of my throat to learn that the neighbor had a gas leak. DCFD turned off the gas and was waiting for the gas company to arrive. All's well. Starting to breathe again.

Thanks to my unmanageably prolific RSS reader, I had been vaguely aware of some atheist bus ads in Toronto. I kind of assumed, though, that they would remain firmly planted in the Internet part of my life—that mentions of them cropping up in far-away cities might continue to float through my peripheral, but I would never actually come into contact with one. I haven't, but @maybeorange did and she managed to snap a picture of it for me.

I know that these will have some people up-in-arms but I (perhaps unsurprisingly) welcome the ads. They may not be a very persuasive argument for atheism, but they could be encouragement enough for closet atheists to be less bashful about their lack of belief. Sure, there will be a backlash (comprised, I'm sure, of a coalition of the deeply devout and non-believers who believe the issue should remain taboo), but any reaction more extreme than the eye rolls I give to God's billboards doesn't deserve to be taken seriously. These ads are about as non-confrontational as something defined solely by its not being another thing can be. And they're so...positive! Then again, what could be more inspirational than knowing that the things that make our lives great are intrinsic to us and not the result of some external, magical being?

DATE-NIGHT SPOTS
So, where do you want to go Saturday night? It’s an age-old question that often makes couples cringe. Instead of sitting at home or falling back on an old standby, head to one of our favorite spots for couples. The quaint and historic Tabard Inn (1739 N St. NW, 202-331-8528; tabardinn.com) is très romantic, while Co Co. Sala (929 F St. NW, 202-347-4265; cocosala.com) offers a dimly lit dining room and intimate tables for two. At Oya, also in Penn Quarter (777 9th St. NW, 202-393-1400; oyadc.com), sweethearts can whisper sweet nothings to each other by the modern fireplace or tucked away in a white leather banquette. And at Teatro Goldoni (1909 K St. NW, 202-955-9494; teatrogoldoni.com), gourmands will fall in love with Italian cuisine—and maybe each other—all over again.

LOWCOMMITMENT LIVING SPACES (RENTALS)
There’s no need to sacrifi ce comfort and luxury if you choose to rent, either for an extended visit or an annual lease. Government contractors, politicos and theater companies all say great things about AKA’s White House (1710 H St. NW, 202-904-2500; hotelaka.com), where Molton Brown toiletries, Bosch washers and Sony Wega televisions make extended-stay guests feel at home, while spa services and a concierge deliver hotel-quality attention just two blocks from the real White House. It’s one of the reasons the private residences made such a splash when they launched several years ago. The on-site bistro at Turnberry Tower (1820 Fort Myer Dr., Arlington, 703-243-3000; turnberrytowerarlington.com) offers a variety of breakfast options, while the concierge service makes residents feel like they have their own personal assistant. This is a new weekly feature that was inspired by a conversation with Dr. Nir Buras. He is the man behind McMillan Two, which calls for narrowing the Anacostia, extending the L’Enfant street grid to both sides of the river and building many more bridges. He is a Classicist, and believes that using traditional materials and techniques in our built environment builds better places. More on him in the near future.

This building serves as the home of the Christian Heurich House Museum. From the website:

One of Washington’s best-kept secrets, The Brewmaster’s Castle is the most intact late-Victorian home in the country, and a Landmark on the National Register of Historic Places.

Built in 1892-1894 of poured concrete and reinforced steel by German immigrant, local brewer and philanthropist, Christian Heurich (HI-rick), it is also the city’s first fireproof home.

Heurich was Washington’s second largest landowner, the largest private employer in the nation’s capital, and as the world’s oldest brewer, ran his brewery until his death at 102.

A visit to The Brewmaster’s Castle is a visit back in time to the
late-19th Century, when the Heurich family was in residence in Washington’s premier residential neighborhood.

No big surprises in the first D.C. Council vote on legalizing same-sex marriage: the Council today voted 11-2 to approve the "Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Equality Amendment Act of 2009," with Marion Barry (D-Ward 8) and Yvette Alexander (D-Ward 7) the only dissenters.

The historic legislation still needs to pass a second vote in the Council in the next month, at which point it will be sent to D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty for his signature. Fenty has promised he will sign the bill.

During a brief debate period before the vote, David Catania (I-At large), the bill's champion, remarked that when he first joined the Council in 1997, he never imagined that he would see the day when the body would take up such legislation.

Barry was perhaps the only vote in question today. While in the past the Ward 8 Council member has promised to support same-sex marriage, earlier this year Barry flip-flopped on the issue and voted against recognizing gay marriages that are performed legally in other states.

"The African American community has much different views on this issue," Barry said today, noting that he would have preferred to see a ballot initiative on gay marriage.

In voting for the bill today, the Council also sent a firm message to the Washington Archdiocese, which has threatened to stop providing services inside the District of Columbia through its Catholic Charities group should the bill pass as it's currently written. Ward 6's Tommy Wells made a point of listing other religious groups that already provide services in D.C. that could step in to fill the gap.

Green Lantern #48 (DC - Johns / Mahnke / Alamy) BLACKEST NIGHT continues! Agent Orange and his Orange Lanterns face off against the Black Lantern Corps, and Larfleeze finds himself wanting something he never has before: Help. Meanwhile, Saint Walker comes face-to-face with the one being in the universe he has no patience for â€" Sinestro! This issue is a crux in the Blackest Night saga! Not too long ago, the Indigo Lanterns came with the knowledge that a combination of any other light with a Green Lantern's light could disrupt the connection the black rings have with their hosts.  Essentially killing the Black Lantern. Since that time, Hal and company have been on a mission to the home worlds of the other corps in an attempt to A) save their power batteries from the wave of death that is the Black Lanterns, B) recruit the other corps in the was against the Black Lantern Corps.  In both, they succeed. In all parts of literature, I love when mortal enemies before allies. There is just something so entertaining when two forces that are bent on the others destruction are forced to face a common foe. In this case we have a large group filled with divergent philosophies. It's like if the Allies and the Axis from WWII had to join forced to beat back some common threat.  Unthinkable, yet ground breaking. Johns and company continue to rock out in one of the best mega-events in years. Grade: A

Filmed live Nov. 28, 2009, at the Modest Proposal reunion show in DC on a Flip Mino HD. Since the Flip HD has a CMOS filter it does fairly well in low light, but not well enough. I tweaked the colors and blacks to create an 80's cheap/punk vintage look and feel. Enjoy.

My Bye week came thanks to Penn State giving us a week off for Thanksgiving.

Saturday night was jam packed.  Cultural program at a near by high school, where my cousin performed giving way to a quick pregame with some friends at GW.
Dinner at Mie N Yu in Georgetown which was awesome. Mienyu has an interesting silk road theme - reflected in different seating areas and a menu to match.  One of the nicer restaurants I've been to in a while.  Service was quick, food was delicious and cocktails were on point! All on a Georgetown budget, of course.

Afterward, I made the sooner than anticipated return to Policy. The place was packed beyond belief. No sliders this time though, straight business at the bar.  Made the great decision to go to nearby Chi-Cha Lounge on U St. The line outside moved fairly quickly, maybe our larger group worked to our advantage. Dark, red-lit place like a scene out of a vampire movie. Top 40 music, the DJ was good.  Hookah and drinks for a very reasonable price.

Later in the week I attended a Beer & Cheese pairing event at Public Bar near Dupont. Public is a great sports bar that has a rooftop as well as a few floors with good music, plenty of TV's around.  The bar food was very typical though- greasy.  The event was a part of a fundraising effort for the Tigerlily Foundation - I met the founder and had some pretty insightful conversation with her. I wish Maimah the best of luck.

The next night I hung out at Sushi Damo in Rockville.  Ambience was nice with DC type prices yet most of the menu items were sub-par.

Thanksgiving with the family was nice - ate way too much!  Surprisingly the football throughout the day wasn't all that exciting, with some uneven match-up's and a lop-sided night game.  The late night held interesting though - made a last minute decision with my friend to go to the shopping outlets about an hour from my house. At 1am.
There were so many people there, it was like they were giving stuff away for free (they weren't)  A few good deals later, I was home at 6:30am just in time to see my parents off before they left for their weekend getaway.  I was in Georgetown to do it all over again with another friend at 10am.  The weather was nice, so it made for a pleasant 4 hour window shopping experience. Midway through the day, I was able to get my friend to try some chocolate babka from Dean & Deluca - always good!

The week long break wrapped up well with some more family, seeing a few more friends and some exciting yet disappointing football.
Looking forward to a couple of weeks of work and then a much anticipated trip to the motherland.
