The master minds behind Twitter are bringing iPhone based credit card payments to small businesses and individual persons. I have been waiting for possibility to do small monetary interactions between me and my friends without the netservices of banks so this is definitively something to follow.

The thing is that I don't think that the use of magnetic cards is a valid choice in the future. Different NFC technologies are coming (like they have been during the last 5 or so years), but probably this robust approach is the right way to get this thing started.

Kudos for SquareUp (http://squareup.com/)!

OMG. This is in Santa Monica practically on the beach across the street from The Viceroy and Shutters. (I bet this ATM has a hotline to hackers in India.) I am pointing this out because both my Mom and I had fraudulent activity on our credit cards this week. A first for both of us. No, I did not use this ghetto ATM. :-)

I was reading an article today in one of my favorite publications about how to get free trials without actually using your credit card by generating valid credit card numbers using a simple algorithm called the Luhn check. So I wrote a little script that generates credit card numbers that will be deemed valid by most software checks. This will work because the service won’t know that the credit card is invalid until they actually try to charge it. Well, the card may be valid since my script uses random numbers. Obviously this if for informational purposes only and should never actually be used.

Most credit card numbers are validated using an algorithm called the “Luhn check”. This is a very simple algorithm that doubles the odd digits and does a sum to see if the number is divisible by 10. The credit card companies use a slightly different version that involves a check digit as the last digit. To generate a credit card number that will pass most validation software (as long as they don’t actually try to process the credit card) one only needs to follow these steps to make sure that the generated credit card is valid

To generate a credit card number that will pass most validation software (as long as they don’t actually try to process the credit card) one only needs to follow these steps to make sure that the generated credit card is valid.

Choose 16 random numbers starting with a 3,4,5 or 6.
Starting with the first digit, double every other number.

If doubling a number results in a two digit number, add those digits together to produce a single digit number

Replace the odd digits with the new ones just created. You should now have 16 numbers consisting of all the new numbers and the original even numbers

Add up all sixteen numbers.

Manipulate the check digit so that the sum is divisible by 10.

Replace the last digit of the original random string with the new manipulated check digit.

Thats really all there is to it. Check out the source of my javascript credit card generator if you want to see how to generate and validate the credit card numbers.

The reason for starting with a 3,4,5, or 6 is that different card types start with different digit. The 3 is American Express, 4 is Visa, 5 is Master Card, 6 is a Discover Card.

Some companies use more digits to show that the card is from them. For example 5254 is a Master Card from the Bank of America and 4013 shows that it is a Visa card from Citibank. Also note that the expiry date has nothing at all to do with the card number.

What makes Visa have one of the top 10 business deals, in one of the worst economic times?

For one, it is a financial company that went public in March 2008. And as of this past December the stock was up slightly over the $44-a-share offering price. Impressive considering the dismal state of most of the market.

The secret to Visa's prosperity is that Visa doesn't lend money, it collects transaction fees every time you charge something on a Visa card.

This means it isn't directly affected by the bad loan problems bedeviling the rest of the financial world.

Not a bad plan, not bad at all.

Google is developing a micropayment platform that will be “available to both Google and non-Google properties within the next year,” according to a document the company submitted to the Newspaper Association of America. The system, an extension of Google Checkout, would be a new and unexpected option for the news industry as it considers how to charge for content online.

Micropayments are very important these days because there so many services which costs just 1 or two dollars. Think about MP3 downloads of in this case to buy your daily newspaper.

The question is who can use this future Google checkout extension? Only credit card holders? In several countries a credit card is not a "normal" payment method. Maybe Google should offer a virtual wallet as well...

If you’ve fallen behind on your repayments, you may have received letters or phone calls from your lenders. These can range from mild reminders to official warnings – neither of which is likely to make you feel any more comfortable about your debts.

For anyone struggling with debt, finding the right solution is important. Here we take a look at one of the debt solutions which has helped many people: debt management plan

Aside from helping people keep up with their unsecured loans/credit card repayments, debt management has also reduced many borrowers stress levels by allowing them to leave the letters and phone calls to experts who work with debt – and with creditors – on a daily basis.

What is debt management?

A debt management plan is an informal arrangement with your lenders, in which you will make reduced monthly payments to your lenders, based on how much you can realistically afford.

In many cases, it is also possible to arrange a freeze or reduction in interest and other charges, which can prevent your debt from getting any bigger.

You can arrange a debt management plan on your own, but because of the time and effort that can be involved, you may prefer to arrange your debt management plan through a professional debt management company. In many cases, they will negotiate with your lenders on your behalf, and act as a point of contact between you and your lenders for the duration of the debt management plan.

Debt management and lender communication

As it’s an informal arrangement, your debt management plan will not impose any legal restrictions on your lenders, but if they have agreed to work with your debt management organization, it is unlikely that they will send you any more letters or make any phone calls – as long as you stick to your side of the agreement.

A note about debt management

Your lenders are under no obligation to accept the terms of a debt management plan, and if they do, it may only be for a specific period of time. A professional debt management plan will normally be agreed in six or 12-month `blocks`. This means that at the end of each agreed period, your lenders may either decide to continue with the terms as they stand or talk to your debt management representatives about arranging different terms.

Plus, you should be aware that changing the way you repay your debts can show up on your credit rating, which can affect the cost and/or difficulty of obtaining credit for the next six years.

Police have charged a Cheshire police officer for using his ex-wife's credit card to register on a popular dating Web site.

Police received a complaint earlier this year that Robert Anderson, 38, had used the credit card to register an account on eHarmony.com. They said he ran up charges of $119 on the card.

Anderson was charged on Saturday with illegal use of a credit card.

Lt. Jay Markella, the Cheshire Police Department's public information officer, said police would not comment on any pending investigations or internal actions the department may take against Anderson. He would not say if Anderson had been placed on leave.

“It's our policy not to comment on investigations whether internal or external,” Markella said.

Anderson is scheduled to appear in Waterbury Superior Court today for the misdemeanor charge.
