Dutch Design Week 09: in Eindhoven this week graduate designer Erik De Nijs of Nieuwe Heren presents a set of suitcases that can be combined to form a sofa when not in use.

Called Suited Case, De Nijs aimed to produce something that reminds users of the familiarity of home whilst travelling.

The design includes four pieces of luggage that have been covered in fabrics associated with sofas.

See all our stories about Dutch Design Week in our special category.

Here’s some information from the designer:

The ‘suited case’ is a project which is inspired on the idea of people waiting during their trip. People often go and rest sitting on their suitcases, that is the starting point of this design.

I created a living room couch which is built from a suitcase set. The set is meant for 2 people, consists of 2 pieces of hand luggage and 2 pieces of large luggage. These parts of the set can be put together as a couch at all times when there is waiting involved. So you take your own comfortable living room couch with you on your trip.

This concept came from a research on nostalgia during travelling. When a familiar object from home is taken with you on a trip you feel much more at ease. And which object is more familiar then your own comfortable couch.

The fabrics which are used to cover the suit cases emphasize the homely feeling. I searched for a combination of fabrics which amplify each other and which create a prominent image. By using prints on the large luggage and the pad on the hand luggage I tried to put down a lively picture.

Finally there are some typical suitcase elements, like a big zipper, handles and wheels. These elements show the suitcases when the couch is constructed.

Living with my parents, I brought P over and she and I sat down on the couch in the den, after I closed the door. We started making out, and then she walked her hand down to my zipper. I already had a nice throbbing bulge going there. I knew we couldn't start anything that would make noise right there with my mom in the kitchen, only a few feet away on the other side of the door. I was pretty innocent, because I didn't immediately know why P swung her head down there, pulled it out and started massaging it, then put her lips around it, but I knew it was going to define a life long search for that feeling, one that is still going on now, many years later.

A funny thing happened the next week when I was over at P's appartment. I was drunk with desire for her and decided to go down on her, the first time I'd ever even considered it. Well, I was surprised to note that though the odor of P's pussy wasn't badn on the contrary it was making me want to come, but the taste was awful, horrible, like poison.  Well, it was only when she went into the other room that I noticed a bottle of medecine on the dresser next to her bed. It was vaginal suppositories! No wonder!

This is Bella and Sophie - Our Maltese "girls" weighing in at 6 pounds and 4 pounds - tiny bodies but huge hearts! It's rare for them to look this nice. Five to six walks a day takes its toll in dirty paws, matted hair, and assorted pieces of bark and weeds stuck here and there. :-)  On this day, I got them right after the groomer finished bathing and clipping them. (They don't stay this white for very long!)  In an unusually quiet moment, I captured this image of them resting on our couch and actually both looking at the camera at the same time. Even with fill flash, the leather couch had picked up some distracting highlights and hot spots from the windows behind.  This is where Nikon's Capture NX2 came through to save the day. Their truly amazing U Point Technology allowed very localized and specific editing of just those few spots that needed to be toned down enough so they wouldn't detract from the "main attractions", here.  These "Color Control Points" provide for very precise control of color and light in very small spots or over the entire photo. Even though it's Nikon software, it will work with images from any camera so take a look.  They offer a trial version and give you 60 days to evaluate it - Try it - You'll like it!
