Poor Al Gore. Global warming completely debunked via the very Internet you invented. Oh, oh, the irony.

TORONTONov. 19 /CNW/ - An editorial cartoon on the front page of the November 18 Toronto edition of Metro, a widely distributed daily commuter news digest, has drawn the ire of the president of Toronto's transit workers union.

The cartoon depicts a streetcar operator leaning out of his window with his hand in the pocket of a startled pedestrian reading a newspaper with the headline "Rate increase."

"Fare increases are always accompanied by a large spike in verbal and physical assaults on vehicle Operators and Collectors," says Bob Kinnear, president of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113. "Passengers angered by having to pay more to ride the TTC take out their frustration on the front line workers, not on TTC management or the Commissioners.

Not exactly the shocker of the century, but one to take note of nonetheless; the CIA is now investing in Visible Technologies, a software firm that monitors and steers social media, to more closely monitor the clicks, requests, tweets, pokes, stumbles, digs, feeds and any other dumb-downed cutesy-titled web exercises one may engage in.

We have been monitored by the government for argueably all our lives, others more closely than some. And when suspicious web activity has surged, they have proven to at least in the game, though not necessarily a step ahead.

However, now Wired Magazine is breaking the story about what the CIA wants now : " America’s spy agencies want to read your blog posts, keep track of your Twitter updates — even check out your book reviews on Amazon."

The magazine goes on: "In-Q-Tel, the investment arm of the CIA and the wider intelligence community, is putting cash into Visible Technologies... It’s part of a larger movement within the spy services to get better at using ”open source intelligence” — information that’s publicly available, but often hidden in the flood of TV shows, newspaper articles, blog posts, online videos and radio reports generated every day."

Visible scours almost a million 2.0 websites every day, nitpicking posts, conversations, blogs, Flickr, Youtube, and the like, to dish out a rundown of what is being said on these sites. People subscribed to Visible are provided with a plate of real-time feeds of everything searched and said, based on a series of keywords.

The CIA states it wants Visible to track foreign social media, and issue spooks, which is “early-warning detection on how issues are playing internationally."

The problem with all this of course is the paramount difference between saying and doing.

We all post, send and comment with little second thought. We also have heard that the internet is public territory, and have correspondingly experienced at least one bout of unfair or unmerited attention based on our web-action or an action documented and exhibited over the web.

So, although anything we put out there is technically fair game, it could quickly become controversial if they utilized information gathered through Visible to conduct unauthorized investigations. Still may not hit close to home-but think if they used found information on visited sites or commented photos done by political candidates or journalists, lawyers, doctors or professors.

The potential for information and character exploitation through this avenue, although said information has been conducted on open, public forums and gathered through a legal and accepted platform, is monumental.

"A naked man who climbed out of a window and hid on the ledge to escape his lover's furious husband has been caught on camera.

The terrified 25-year-old Sun Meng fled from the balcony window when he was caught in bed with the man's wife at the married couple's apartment in Chengdu, central China.

Sun Meng has been given the cold shoulder by his community after the extraordinary picture of him cowering naked outside the flat were posted on the internet.

Photographs of the anrgy showdown, taken by a startled neighbour, were uploaded to a local community website.

They show Sun perched on the first floor ledge while his lover is confronted by her un-named husband inside.

"I know what I did was wrong but I was afraid he would kill me.

"People are even laughing at how I look naked - but I have to point out it was a very cold day," he added."

I cannot believe some of the controversial shit I am watching on TV right now; "I'm 8 years old, and I need a sex change?" I'm sorry but HOW out of order is that? You don't know what you are at 8? I think that's a bit much!

I've also just watched how they reckon the training techniques used to prepare Police for riots do more harm than good, and next week they are breaking the final taboo by doing a documentary about the relationship between Race & Intelligence!

What with all that and some of the stuff being said on The X Factor in just the first two weeks of live shows, what's next?!?!?

fpuk69 says...

OMG there's SO much I wanna say I don't know where to begin!

Well first of all, I think its good that Dannii apologised for her comments last night. I don't think it was all planned I think she tried to be controversial but picked the wrong subject and it backfired on her but she's apologised and that was so the right thing to do so that's the end of it.

I thought Alexandra Burke's dance routine was fucking amazing! I'm not being funny, but you know everyone is going to be comparing her to Leona and we all know that nobody can compete with Leona's voice so I think it was clever how she brought a dance routine into it because not only does it separate her from Leona but also The X Factor focuses too much on voice and not enough on dance so it was blinding seeing a really hardcore dance routine like that!

I think Robbie is just amazing and he really doesn't know what a legend he already is. He's not about having an amazing voice (although he can sing really well when he wants to) he's just a naturally talented, really special person and that's why everyone loves him! I've always thought the reason he quit Take That was because it was too manufactured and wouldn't let him express himself; but then he went solo, expressed himself and look what happened! I loved how gracious and surprised he was by the incredible reception he got as well - some people just can't believe their own hype.

As for the results, I think they should do away with the groups, because they always get fucked over and never, ever win. OK so I know JLS are doing really well but they still didn't win did they? I reckon they should just do boys and girls for both under and over 25s and be done with it. Everyone knows that groups exist for people who are talented enough to make it on their own; why else do you think Miss Frank were put together? Cos none of them were good enough on their own that's why.

The only other thing I'll say is one of my mates (the insatiable Miss Johns) suggested that they should have Robbie as a judge while Louis Walsh wasn't there. They think Robbie should replace Louis Walsh permanently because his bias towards the Irish groups is starting to take the piss; not to mention that fact that Robbie would be a blinding judge and they need a young man on the panel too, not to ageing (and biased) record producers every year.

Well up for starting a campaign to get Robbie as the next X Factor Judge.

Sheer as well!

So, for some reason in all the funny drama of Burton talking shit / trying to
get YoBeat to pull the story on its Fall Bash (a glorified family picnic),
we failed to notice the new issue of Frequency Magazine had just arrived.

Frequency is a great magazine. We love it. But our excitement had turned to
the Burton fun about how "you're not supposed to write about the private
function that is the Burton party." It's private we've been told. The media
isn't really supposed to go there.

So imagine our surprise when we discovered that the new Frequency has a six
page story on the Burton Fall Bash and the Burton Family. But wait, you're
not supposed to write about it? I mean, that's what the Burton-created
anonymous comments were criticizing YoBeat for, right? In other words, this
is fucking amazing and makes me laugh.

Careful Frequency staff, you're about to get a shit-storm coming your way
when the cool-aid drinkers catch wind of this one! I mean, you made them
look like a nice happy family. How dare you put them in the public limelight
like that!
