This afternoon Facebook posted an update about all the television networks that have integrated Facebook Connect, including ABC who has two new exciting integrations. The first is a promotion for the series “FlashForward” which takes advantage of Facebook Connect to integrate your profile data into a promotion. It’s similar to other promotions we’ve seen such as the Doritos promotion and the Prototype XBox game trailer.

In contrast to MySpace, who also has their own identity service, Facebook has been focused on striking large media integrations with Connect. Not only do these partnerships help increase engagement on the partner sites but it also helps Facebook expand the reach of Facebook Connect. Google has been heavily promoting their own service, Friend Connect, which is similar to Facebook Connect and they’ve already successfully generated 8 million communities.

However Facebook’s model is a smart one as they are going after high profile sites which end up generating more press coverage, building buzz for Facebook Connect. In addition to ABC’s FastForward trailer, ABC will also be launching a new video player tomorrow which leverages Facebook Connect to created a social experience as visitors watch full episodes of ABC content from the ABC website.

This sounds somewhat similar to Hulu’s integration, however it appears that this may be more integrated with the actual video player. We won’t know for sure until tomorrow, but this definitely sounds like what we would expect out of a truly interactive social viewing experience. Facebook is also highlighting a number of their other television integrations in today’s blog post.

What's your language - if you have one?  I'm referring to how we greet fellow cyclists (or runners).  It seems to be an ongoing source of irritation or opportunity to flame road riders or each other. Even more so when one comes across riders who feel entitlement - entitled to the track, entitled to push past, entitled to curse if you are in their way, entitled to being the biggest asswipes too!

I really do make an effort but I know there are times when I am watching the wheel in front and can't look around much less raise my head and smile or say hello.  That feeble flap of the fingers is all you're going to get.  Hey but the intent is there.  Conversely, when sending it down a rocky mountain, you'll more likely get a squeak but the white knuckles mean no waving, not a hand nor a single digit.

I'm also known to stop completely to talk to other mountain bikers  with much eye rolling from my companions.  Hey, can I help it that I know so many people??  We seem to live in isolation behind high walls, locked in office buildings and we seem to have lost the art of connection.

All the experts talk about the connection economy and how relationships have become the new best business tool.  So greet your fellow rider, greet the pedestrians, show a little courtesy to the people around you.  You never know, it may be the most valuable greeting you have ever given or received.

Helloooooo!

How To Experience Burning Man 2009 Remotely

by Scott Beale on August 31, 2009 · 9 comments

Can’t make it to Burning Man 2009 this year? Here are a few ways you can experience the event remotely through the wonders of the Interweb.

The Burning Blog

good morning, man

Once again John Curley has been doing a fantastic job documenting the evolution of Black Rock City. This year John is joined by an expanded team of bloggers who are posting updates on the Burning Blog as the event unfolds.

Photos

Throughout the week people will be uploading photos from the Playa. Here are all the photos tagged “burningman2009” on Flickr sorted by interestingness.

Also Flickr just announced that they are supporting machine tags for Burning Man photos so that they will show up on Burning Man Earth using the Burning Man API.

It would be an understatement to say that Twitter will be huge at Burning Man this year. The existing wi-fi network along with this being the first year with cell phone coverage, is going to make it easier than ever for people to post Twitter updates from the playa. Also at long last Burning Man has not just one, but two official Twitter accounts: @burningman & @blackrockcity

Technically and literally, the internet can make us happier people.  It's simple; the internet makes it easy and quick for us to find information ("how to" videos, articles, etc.) about being happy.

Obviously we have to put effort into being happy too.  The internet isn't a miracle drug, but it is seriously a tool that could help make this world a much happier place.  People used to have to pay loads of money to get books or doctors to teach them how to overcome problems, depression, lonliness.  Now, in less than half the time and for free, we can learn these same techniques!

Plus, one of the major preventions of suicide/depression is having support.  There are people willing to talk and support everywhere and the internet brings us together.  It's almost too easy.
