There’s some people on Tumblr I really wish had commenting on their Tumble Blogs. (Maybe go use disqus to add commenting like so many other Tumblrs do.) Because there’s times where I’d like to comment on what people post.

That’s one of the complaints I actually have about Tumblr. Having a conversation isn’t easy. Don’t get me wrong, I love Tumblr. It does so many things right! But making it a little easier to have conversations would take Tumblr to another (better) level.

Ok, that’s not really true, but it does make me happy…

One of the main reasons I write this blog is the interaction I get to have with the people who read it. I love hearing your thoughts. I love when you tell me I’m wrong, or point out things I haven’t thought of. Basically, I love getting to know you all.

Recently, lots of people have remarked to me that the number of comments on their blogs are falling – replaced, it seems, by retweeting. While I’ve said before that I think someone retweeting a post is a compliment to the author, it certainly doesn’t match comments in terms of depth or, necessarily, furthering the discussion.

Interestingly, even with the shift to lower-commitment commenting via Twitter, the 90/10 rule still seems to apply. That means that, on average, only one in ten of you will comment-on or tweet a post. The other 90 per cent will “lurk.”

This is a call to everyone reading this, but especially those who read but don’t often add your two cents. Please take two seconds to de-lurk and say hi.

Who else is out there?

Commenting may not make you sexy, but it makes you de-lurky

If you’re reading this and you don’t usually comment on posts, please say hi! It’s really simple. If you haven’t done it before:

  1. Scroll right to the bottom of the post and the comments
  2. Fill-in your name and email address (I won’t do anything with it) and, if you like, your website address
  3. Let me know who you are! A little about you; why you read the site; what you want to get out of it; what you wish I’d write about – that kind of thing. Whatever you like. Introduce yourself. Say hi.
  4. If you want to receive subsequent comments via email, check the box below the “Post Comment” button.
  5. Click “Post Comment.”

Looking forward to getting to know you.

pyt-think-w1Inspired by the question by Damond Nollan on Google Reader:

“What do I have to change in my settings to encourage commenting within Google Reader? Second, how would you know people are commenting once you’ve read the post?”

I let myself compile this little how to which perhaps could be of a help also for others.

How to encourage commenting in Google Reader:

1. Go to Sharing settings

2. Assign people you follow and people following you to groups.

3. Edit settings of the group you want to share comments with.

4. In case you want to create special group – go to Google Contacts: http://www.google.com/contacts

how do you know that people are commenting on your shared post?

To check if shared by you item has the comments – go to ‘Comment view’ (just below ‘People you follow’).

I hope it will help new users of Google Reader. Enjoy!

PS: As for today, you will have to go through the procedure of “encouraging comments” every time you log into Google Reader and even each time you refresh it (probably due to some kind of small though annoying bug in the new, social “incarnation” of all Geeks favorite tool ;) )

PS2: Interesting post on the subject by Damond Nollan here: http://www.damondnollan.com/2009/08/could-google-reader-become-next.html#

Thumbs Up My Comment On The Ar by Anthony Marco
(download)

Is it just me who doesn't get the need to comment on articles or comment on comments and thumbs up or thumbs down comments on comments? Am I that only one who's confused here? Feel free to comment below!

Don't wait anymore to load another page -- just load the comments in place and get into the conversation immediately. Try it today. Just click on a "Comment" button anywhere on any post, and let us know what you think.

AJAX for the win! It's simple and fun.

We just got our first batch of comment spam to users who have decided to allow public comments. Our response: DIE, SPAMMERS!

We've plugged into an industry-leading comment-spam fighting platform (we're not telling who) that will just bounce the spammers on their asses. Thanks to posterous user Bwana for reporting the issue earlier this afternoon. We're all about fast response.

Thanks for using posterous.

We've rolled out a couple new features that we hope you'll enjoy.

First is changing your address. Just hit Edit Site and you'll see the rest. Keep in mind you'll lose your current site name so if you've been using your site for a while, you might not want to do this.

Second is being able to opt-in/opt-out of email comment notifications. Later, if you get sick of receiving them, you can click "Don't notify me" on the same post page next to the comment you created.

Keep on postin', friends...

Yesterday we introduced commenting via email. When someone comments on your post, you get an email. No need to visit the web to post another comment, just hit reply! Your comment will be added to the post and emailed to other users on the thread.

Email is not only the easiest way to share files, but it's the easiest way to comment on posts and communicate with friends. It's very natural to have a conversation over email regarding that mp3 you just shared or the photos from your vacation you just posted. And that's why we introduced commenting via email.

We hope it leads to more commenting on posts. Let us know what you think!

The My Accounts page has been updated with a few new features -- you can now have a custom personalized site name instead of "your_username's posterous". In addition, you can add a subhead that will appear directly under your site name too.

We also added a posterous favicon, which you should be seeing in your browser bar right now. Isn't it cute?

Finally, you'll notice some improvements to the comment system. We support some HTML in comments now, and properly take care to make all links in comments have the "rel=nofollow" tag. Comment spammers, stay away!

Rest assured we're in the process of another major redesign that will help keep the Posterous UI clean and make it easier to get to things. We're brewing up some good stuff, but keep your feedback pouring in. Thanks for your support.
