This is inspired by my recent foray into (indoor) rock climbing. Spent more time on it than the previous few, but Im playing with my Brushes technique.

Also, no special effects apps used in this one!

I'm gonna need to up my drawing rate to reach 50, though.

Hey Cali rock climbers.  This one's for you!  As you may know, the Touchstone Climbing bouldering series, TBS5, is well underway.  These competitions run at all the Touchstone Climbing gyms in the northern California region.  They are a great way to work on some personal bests, check out new gyms, and meet other climbing enthusiasts.  These competitions are friendly and fun, giving you the option to participate in the Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced levels.  They are free for members and $10 for non-members, which includes a competition T-shirt and chances to win climbing prizes.

The most recent boulder competition was held last week at Sacramento Pipeworks.  Congrats to all those who participated including several notable Skimblers!

Maria Ly - 1st overall @ Pipeworks
Looking intent on sending...

Gabriel Vanrenen - 7th intermediate @ Pipeworks
The slab is on!

Tantek Çelik - 10th intermediate @ Pipeworks

Complete TBS5 bouldering results on the Touchstone Climbing competition site.

There's one more bouldering competition left in the TBS5 series held on Friday, November 13th at Berkely Ironworks.  Be sure to join the trip and track your climbing ticks.

Now, if you have no idea about what we're talking about but perhaps a little curious about what all this climbing talk's about, why not visit a local climbing gym?  Climbing is a great way to get active and have fun!  Check out Mahalo's rock climbing page for more info and perhaps head over to REI and gear up.  Believe us, it's worth it.

Good luck & climb on!

You can't beat a trip to the Peak District to remind you why trad climbing is so fantastic.
Unfortunately, you also can't beat a trip to the Peak District to remind you why you suck at trad climbing...Its the wind that does it...
Anyway, for this short break we decided that we wanted to go somewhere quiet so we would have our choice of routes.  A cryptic text from Ste and we were off for a first look at Dovestone Tor.  Now, at this point we forgot that we were soft, out of shape indoor southerners and the hour walk-in (uphill) took us a bit by surprise... as did the fact that we forgot to check out the guidebook properly and missed where it said Dovestone was a summer crag best visited in the afternoon.
So you live and learn.  And the views were fantastic... can't get them at Craggy.
  • Now on the important point of skills to remember:
  • Bring coffee both to the crag and the place you are sleping (how I could have forgoten this I don't know, and jeez did it make life hard!!!)
  • Bring dog food (I packed everything needed to take a Labrador to the Peaks, except his food... an emergency stop at the local shop sorted this, but not before I sliced my finger trying to rip the can open...)
  • Read the guidebook BEFORE chosing your crag!

British alpinist and writer Andy Kirkpatrick is currently publishing a series of top tips for climbers on his Twitter feed.

I wanted to keep these for future reference, so I created a tag in my Delicious account for them. All the tips are linked to from this page. And you can grab the RSS feed too.

I'm doing this with Andy's permission. If I get the time I'll make some code so you can embed the tips feed on your own website.
