I decided to listen to Holst The Planets and put my favourite one on here.

I have chosen Neptune.

I have never heard this one before but its stands apart from the others in that it doesn't sound like a piece of classical music, but much more like the soundtrack to a film, and the actual sound of it sums up almost perfectly how I feel nearly all the time.

We'll never know what it feels like to be somebody else but if you could literally take all my strange little experiences, controversy, deep thoughts, campiness and all the other random crap that goes through my mind and basically translated how it feels to be me into a piece of music it would sound a lot like this.

This music is literally the way I experience the world made into a sound.

Have a listen and you'll see what I mean...

DESCRIPTION/EXCERPT:

"News of the monumental success of El Sistema, Venezuela's 32-year-old program of social action through music, is rapidly spreading throughout the world. Today over 250,000 Venezuelan teenagers and children, most from impoverished backgrounds, are being filled with an "affluence of the spirit" through the intensive study of music and the participation in orchestras and ensembles. No less a figure than Sir Simon Rattle, conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, has called El Sistema "the most important thing happening in classical music in the world today"."

The remarkable accomplishment of a great humanist, José Antonio Abreu, who dedicated his life to set up the 'Sistema' in 1975, an extraordinary music and social project which has been running in Venezuela in an attempt to transform the lives of the nations poorest children.

It has been using classical music to tackle the social problems of a country where 60% of the population live below the poverty line. By offering free instruments and tuition through a network of after-school centres all over the country, the Sistema has kept thousands of children away from the drugs, alcohol and gang-related violence of the streets and has led to the creation of 30 professional orchestras in a country that had only 2 before it started. Currently, 275,000 children attend the Sistemas schools and many of them play in one of the 125 youth orchestras.

At the pinnacle of the system stands the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela under its music director Gustavo Dudamel who is himself a product of the Sistema and is also the musical director for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.

Inspired by Amanda Ameer’s post on classical music publicists on Twitter and Beth Kanter’s query on a list of arts twitterers, I gathered a preliminary list of more than 150 twitterers in the classical music scene.

I intend to create the most inclusive, elaborate list of classical music twitterers. I know I have left many, many people and organizations out. That’s why I have opened up two forms to add or update your information: if you are a person twittering about classical music, please add or update your information here; if you are an organization twittering about classical music, please add or update your information here. Or alternatively, you can leave a comment below.

Any suggestions on categories or changes to the format, please let me know in a comment below or at dutchperspective (at) mcmvanbree.com.

"Jazz and classical musics should be friends. They have much in common. It is conceivable that a synthesis of the two could be achieved as successfully as that existing between jazz and rock. However, most attempts to meld jazz and classical have yielded mediocre results.

[Nonetheless], some headway has been made....

[On the video featured here], Loussier interprets music from throughout the Bach corpus. The Partitas, Two-Part Inventions, and Chromatic Fantasy are represented as well as Bach's organ work in the "Toccata and Fugue in C minor," (BWV 565). Loussier's treatment of the famous "Minuet in G Major" (BWV Anh. 114, attributed to Christian Petzold) is the most "baroque" of his interpretations. All are preformed beautifully and provocatively. The disc watershed is the live rendering of Chorale No. 1, "Sleepers Awake." The piece is opened by Charbonnier's superb pizzicato and features very rapid playing by all. Loussier indeed performs the best of his long career. Here, the classical/jazz fusion works and works very well and is easily understood by all.

      Tiempo Libre
      Bach In Havana
      Sony-BMG Masterworks
      2009

From France, Bach moves to the more humid climes of the Caribbean and is fully transformed in route. Tiempo Libre is a group of Cuban expats living in Miami, recording cook-fire hot Latin jazz. On Bach In Havana, the group reshapes Bach in their own rhythmic image, proving that a decent jazz treatment of the classics is possible. This particular incarnation manifests as a septet featuring a bright horn section and the necessisarily present percussion orchestra. Directed by pianist Jorge Gomez, who is also responsible to the fine arrangements performed. Bach in Havana represents a positive step forward in the melding of jazz and classical genera.

The album shares with Jacques Loussier Plays Bach: The 50th Anniversary Recordingthe Prelude No. 2 in C minor, BWV 847, and the Minuet in G Major. However, the performances by the two ensembles could not be more different or that difference so welcome. One is not better than the other, it is our grace that both exist. In the minuet, Tiempo Libre saturates the quaint melody with a wall of percussion...."
