What would you fight for?
Dear Inquirers,
Some students have begun to make connections between the use of child
soldiers now, and how children have helped or been used in conflicts at
other times, even centuries ago!
I was thinking about my personal perspective, and the questions I would
have as a person, or child, who had to fight. What reasons are good enough to have to fight as a soldier? How serious
would the problem be if I had to use a gun? Are there reasons that are
good enough for this? In countries where children are now used in combat,
not just as messengers or helpers in an army camp, what are the reasons
that children have that cause them to fight? Is there ever a choice? Would the reasons for children to fight and be part of any army hundreds
of years ago still be around today? Would a child fight now, for the same
reasons children fought centuries ago?
In thinking about this, I realized that modern NGO's might be trying to
save and help child soldiers (which is good!), but is there another, more
important problem out there in the world? A problem so big that we fight
about it, and even use children as soldiers? Is this the problem that
NGO's are trying to fix? Should they be trying to fix that one so that we
don't have the problem of child soldiers?
