"SOMEBODY" mentioned that El Spectro doesn't look much like himself
when he is in Ghost mode. So I added a couple of design tweaks to him.

It doesn't matter how beautiful a turn a phrase you can spin, or how unique and interesting a story you can conceive, without good characters and solid characterisations, your efforts will be squandered.

There are perfunctory characters that may only have a couple of lines, these and only these should be created without prior thought. It's all very cool and groovy to have a main protagonist who is... cool and groovy, but on their own you'll be offering readers a hollow experience. You may have come up with a unique hook, or just found a new spin to make an old cliché like the booze-sozzled cop with a broken marriage worth a fresh look, but they have to be surrounded by people who are developed, and differential. You need people who don't all have the same voice as the narrator. That is to say, you'don't want to fall into the easy trap of having a book or script full of people who all sound like YOU.

Functional drones won't carry a story in a satisfying way, nor will dialogue which only serves to provide a cue to the next piece of action/drama/trauma. Even a tale which follows the simplistic route of a first person narrative needs a full cast with motives of their own, prejudices of their own, pasts of their own.

You need never explain these pasts and prejudices if they would harm the pace, but they will inform of themselves through the richer dialogue that knowing your characters will provide you with.

You can conjure these characters yourself out of thin air, but remember, you already have a cast of thousands in your head, you've met thousands of people in your life, some briefly, but there will be something in a lot of those people that will resonate with you.

I am constantly filling what I call my peoplepedia. It's just a notebook (any notebook will do as long as it's fairly durably, spiral bound ones are too prone to damage), and I try to remember everyone I've ever met. I trawl my every memory for old teachers, long lost family members, long dead family, people I went to school with, their parents, people I've met on holiday, people I've met through work. People I liked, hated, loved, had crushes on, had crushes on me that I didn't reciprocate. I don't beat my brains out over it, I just pick a period of my life and try to pick it clean.

At first I just remember names, and if I can't remember names I just note them with what I can rememebr about them. Where and when I met them. What they looked like. What they wore. Where they lived. How much they might have earned. What they drove. What they ate. Then I expand, how they talked. What interested them. What bored me. What moods they displayed and what triggered them. It does not matter at all whether it's an accurate recollection or not. Not every person has to have a lot of detail.

From this you can start to use your imagination. Imagine how they'd react in adverse situations, imagine how they might behave to manipulate a situation to their own advantage, or if they were being manipulated. What would make them violent, what would calm them down.

People watching is equally productive, observing strangers and imagining their lives, dramas and changes of fortune, everyone in the world is a resource.

It's very easy to hit a spot in a story where you need a new character, quickly, and a Peoplepedia of your own will soon build up and give a turnkey-turnpage catalogue of people and archetypes you can draw on and project situations and dialogue onto, and be able to have them behave in a realistic way, rather than as thinly characterised functionaries for story progression.

It's important to remember, all characters featured in this story are fictional, any resemblence to persons living or dead is purely coincidental. So don't let anyone get their hands on your little goldmine, and don't leave people too similar to themselves in your story if they're going to be a major character.
