This is a similar cell, but this time we added some stuff to make it secrete (that's when the little yellow square appears in the corner). The fluorescent protein in the vesicles comes out as a tiny "flash"-this takes a few milliseconds, and then the secreted protein is quickly washed away. This is how cells secrete stuff like hormones (think adrenaline, and tigers), or neurotransmitters (think serotonin, and bananas). It's remarkable that we can see this and measure it at all, and it's all thanks to the fluorescent jellyfish protein.

<click to play in its full glory> This is a single cell, where we tracked every vesicle inside it over time and in 3-D. One of my students made the movie-the file was called "crazy movie" for obvious reasons (it's a bit jerky here but you can get the idea, right?) . The amount of information is amazing, and how d'you make sense of it? Every coloured line is the track an individual vesicle (each 200 billionths of a metre!) took over time. The colour indicates the time, changing over the course of the movie. Most amazing is that this stuff is going on in every cell of the body. No wonder we need to eat so much.

Single molecules moving in the membrane of a living cell... These are fluorescent molecules (tagged with the famous green jellyfish protein) motoring around at 37degrees C in the membrane. The movie is playing at more-or-less the real speed. What size are these molecules? We don't know for sure, but certainly a few nanometres (that's a billionth of a metre). What we see is light they emit, not the molecules themselves....that'd be crazy.
