You're probably thinking "what? you're a total Facebook addict, how can you hate it?"
Well, I don't really hate Facebook, let me explain...I work for CBS Interactive as a Front-End Developer on tv.com, and recently I revamped the autocomplete on our search box. Now, when you start typing in a show, it makes a JSON request to our database of shows and it populates a dropdown with suggested search results. What's even cooler is that it also writes links to the show page and the video page, or, of you just click on the show name, or tab down to it and hit enter, it goes to a traditional search results page (which, coincidentally, I built as well.) I'm pretty proud of it, and how well it works, so I showed it to my wife this morning. It's not that she wasn't impressed, but more that it acted the way she would normally expect a search box to act. Why?..... Facebook.Sure, lots of site have fancy AJAX stuff, and lots of sites have something similar to this, but Facebook has every bell and whistle that exists in front-end land. Add to the fact that just about everyone, including my mother-in-law uses Facebook, these features have become the norm and expected, when, in reality, they're really hard to do from a coding perspective. Of course, I'm thankful for Facebook too, for making a more savvy internet user, but still, I want my cookie! The highlight of today's NewTeeVee Live conference was clearly Quincy Smith, the "Hans Solo of TV Everywhere". The guy is brilliant. He is one of the few media executives who totally understands the whole picture: traditional TV, the web, the consumer, the media supply chain, distributors, and advertisers. And he can articulate a powerful and compelling vision for where TV is going (very much UNLIKE his music counterparts).
Comcast's Amy Banse came in 2nd place as far as speakers, in my mind. She is such a great spokesperson for Comcast: precise and calculated. Represents the Comcast brand perfectly.
But where was Hulu? Perhaps true to the current anti-momentum Hulu is struggling with right now, Jason Kilar (Hulu's CEO) was MIA from this year's conference, dubbed "The Year of TV Everywhere".

This afternoon Facebook posted an update about all the television networks that have integrated Facebook Connect, including ABC who has two new exciting integrations. The first is a promotion for the series “FlashForward” which takes advantage of Facebook Connect to integrate your profile data into a promotion. It’s similar to other promotions we’ve seen such as the Doritos promotion and the Prototype XBox game trailer.
In contrast to MySpace, who also has their own identity service, Facebook has been focused on striking large media integrations with Connect. Not only do these partnerships help increase engagement on the partner sites but it also helps Facebook expand the reach of Facebook Connect. Google has been heavily promoting their own service, Friend Connect, which is similar to Facebook Connect and they’ve already successfully generated 8 million communities. However Facebook’s model is a smart one as they are going after high profile sites which end up generating more press coverage, building buzz for Facebook Connect. In addition to ABC’s FastForward trailer, ABC will also be launching a new video player tomorrow which leverages Facebook Connect to created a social experience as visitors watch full episodes of ABC content from the ABC website.
This sounds somewhat similar to Hulu’s integration, however it appears that this may be more integrated with the actual video player. We won’t know for sure until tomorrow, but this definitely sounds like what we would expect out of a truly interactive social viewing experience. Facebook is also highlighting a number of their other television integrations in today’s blog post.
