Area-wide youth gathering was yesterday.  We had four churches represented.  That's so cool.

We started the night off with "card shark."  Every student (and adult who wanted to participate) was given a playing card.  Then I called out poker hands (full house, four of a kind, flush, etc.) and they had to form groups with people possessing the cards they needed to make a hand (and hopefully get 5 people in each group).  Once in those groups I had them answer some simple "get to know you" questions."  The poker hands proved hard for some people.  On the last few, I switched to sums.  So the sums of your cards must equal 12 for example--2 sixes, 3 fours, etc.  Face cards were 10 and Aces were 1.  That was a lot easier for them.

I had a couple students lead us in worship.  They did a wonderful job.  It's always nice to see students step up like that.

I also invited a recruiter from Lipscomb University to be with us.  I figured it was a great opportunity to hang out with multiple youth groups.  So after worship we heard a little bit about LU.

Then it was my turn to deliver the message.  Ha.  Our theme for the area-wides is "That's so wrong!"  We take stories from the Bible that make us angry at a certain character because of the way they acted--stories that make us say, "that's so wrong!"  Sometimes though, we are that person.

I took my story from Luke 16:19-31--the rich man and Lazarus.  The rich man did nothing for Lazarus.  The rich man didn't notice Lazarus.  Lazarus was suffering and the rich man did nothing to help.  That's so wrong!  The point is we know people who are suffering and we do nothing.  We get to where we don't even notice anymore.  An ambulance speeding by us is not a big deal.  A cop car's blue lights are not a big deal.  What if we noticed?

We finished the night with a meal of pizza, cookies, and soft drinks.  Always a good way to end the night, right?
