Have you ever wondered what the Universal Studios Theme Park looked like while it was under construction? Well, neither have I. Regardless, here’s a glimpse of what it would look like if they built it today, because Universal Studios Singapore is presently being built today on Sentosa Island. The theme park is set to open in 2010 on the resort island directly off the south coast of Singapore. It will feature a replica of Hollywood Boulevard, which means I'll finally have a place to shoot all of my Los Angeles scenes. The cable car ride from the mainland offered outstanding views of the city and the islands, and I was reminded that Singapore is the busiest port in the world.

CALIFORNIA > SAN FRANCISCO > Cable Cars

by James Irwin special to CBS5.com
[CBS5.com article republished courtesy KPIX San Francisco]

Other than the Golden Gate Bridge, it's hard to think of anything that says "San Francisco" better than the sight and sound of a cable car clawing its way up a ridiculously steep hill, 'halfway to the stars.'

For tourists and locals alike, the urge to hop aboard, grab a pole and ride to the end of the line is irresistible -- but that brings up the question: "Which line?"

Before the Great Quake of 1906, cable car tracks ran all over the city. Now, only three routes -- all of them downtown -- remain active.

The most utilitarian of the three is the California line. It features a challenging climb and descent but it's just a straight run along California Street.

You'll have a lot more fun on either of the two Powell Street routes, with the more spectacular being the Powell-Hyde Street line.

Starting at Market Street, both routes feature a climb past the hotels and shops of Union Square, up and over Nob Hill, and a nice squeal-inducing turn onto Jackson Street at the edge of Chinatown.

At the next intersection (Mason St.) the Powell/Mason line makes a hard right turn and heads downhill through North Beach to Fisherman's Wharf.

Powell-Hyde riders keep on climbing. Their big payoff comes soon enough, with an exhilarating descent toward the bay and the tall ship Balclutha on the Hyde Street Pier.

At Maritime Park, the Powell-Hyde cars are shunted onto a turntable, where they're spun around and reloaded with passengers.

This is the most scenic cable car turnaround in the city. Pull out your camera and you can get San Francisco's two most famous icons -- the Golden Gate Bridge and a cable car -- in the same picture.

On Saturday we took the San Francisco cable car from the Powell St stop, where it turns around, all the way to Fisherman's Wharf. I shot the entire ride in 1080p with my Canon 5D. I'd never done the cable car ride before but now I highly recommend it. Make sure you are sitting in the front, or hanging off the side. It's a great way to see a lot of the city.

Check out the rolling fog over Alcatraz towards the end of the video. Very cool. Make sure you click to full screen the video, HD is on.

The Powell St station is also where the cable car turns around.

Details on the video: Canon 5D Mark II 1080p H.264. Edited on Final Cut Pro with ProRes 422. 1000% speed across the board. Exported to H.264 and then uploaded to Vimeo. The exported H.264 video still looks flawless on my machine, but Vimeo definitely added a lot of encoding artifacts. Boooo. You can click to download the quicktime video on the Vimeo page.

No, I'm not going to stop complaining about flash video. Get over it.

Spent the day our in the city yesterday. The weather was perfect and we took advantage of it.

First, the cable car ride from Powell St to Fisherman's Wharf. It was my first time taking it and it was awesome! I shot HD 1080p video of the entire ride (8GB!). I'm going to speed it up and post it soon. Please click on images to see the larger versions.

Some more amazing views. Such a perfect day, sunny, but with just enough fog for some cool dramatic photos.

Then we took one of the ghetto boat rides that went around Alcatraz and under the Golden Gate Bridge. BYOB. GTOB.

The boat ride was too rough and too wet to get any good shots. Here are a couple iPhone pics though:
