An exhibition of Emory Douglas’ art made while he was Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party from 1967 until it disbanded in the early 1980s is on display at the New Museum running from July 22, 2009 thru October 18, 2009.
Ironically I saw a video tonight called "Re-Program" by Harlem-based, multimedia artist
Shani Peters based on the
Panther's 10 Point Program. She similarly to Douglas' approach she uses layered photographs to create a world inhabited by the characters from Good Times, The Cosby Show and the Black PanthersHer work is really dope and I am excited that we will be screening it at Community Pride as part of the Harlem Pride Film Forum.
Emory Douglas will be working with teens through the summer on a new mural in Harlem on 122nd Street and Third Avenue. A dedication of the finished mural is anticipated in early September 2009.
