This sounds Awesome!  I want to get this!

spraypaint.jpg
[Click for larger image.] I was lucky enough to see Black Flag play live a number of times in the '80s, around the time Glen E. Friedman shot the photo that graces this book's cover. I was an underage teen sneaking into grownup punk clubs, high on moshpit fumes (and, truth be told, lots else). The band, and that subculture that surrounded them, changed my life.

Spray Paint the Walls: The Story of Black Flag explores the history of one of the most important bands, if not the most important, in American punk history.

Snip from observations by writer Joe Carducci, who was long associated with SST Records (some links added):

"[The book is] very well reported and assembled by Brit music writer Stevie Chick, author of the better of the recent Sonic Youth books

. Neither Greg Ginn nor Henry Rollins sat for interviews but their voices are included from earlier interviews, and more importantly Chuck Dukowski spoke to Chick - a first I believe. The story, laid out from the band's earliest practices in 1976 to its end ten years later, makes a far more dramatic book than the usual shelf-fillers with their stretch to make the empty stories of various chart-toppers sound exciting and crucial and against the odds. "

Here's a related post on photographer Glen E. Friedman's blog.

After the jump: Glen E. Friedman shares an exclusive sneak peek at the back cover, with an '80s photo of Greg Ginn.

Did he die or didn't he?  That's the question being posed today about former Black Flag, Suicidal Tendencies, and Danzig drummer Chuck Biscuits and whether or not his death was a hoax.  You can read more info about it here:  http://www.nme.com/news/black-flag/48125  If he did die, then RIP.  If he didn't, well, it's Halloween's Eve and a perfect excuse to upload the shock horror sounds of Danzig.

Rumor is Danzig lives in my neighborhood.  Don't know if this is true but that would be amazing if it was.  I think if I saw him I'd burst into a glorious bellow.

Mother comes from Danzig's self-titled debut album with that awesome album cover that sets you up glory.  Look at that below.  Beautiful!

Day 1

Upon touching down from the airplane, I was rather tired as I did not have a good sleep on the plane.. Even when I was heading to my hotel in the bus ride there, I had runny nose and slight discomfort. Nonetheless, upon reaching the hotel, we started our Journey in Shibuya. The area where we are staying. Obviously I wasnt familiar with my surroundings and as such I was rather dazed seeing so many things at one go. It wasnt that impressive to be honest at the beginning for me.. however all that changed the moment we headed to Harajuku Via Cab. While we were in Harajuku, we have managed to successfully walk most of the areas.. I begin to think like WOW this is like haji lane cept its so many lanes that it forms a Somerset like area... and the weather is cooling unlike Singapore.

All the brands you ever wanted to see, you can find it easily here in Harajuku and Ode something somehting  and aoyama where you can see everything and everything. Headporter, Comme Des Garcon, Neighborhood, Visvim, Kickslab, Black Flag, RATS, W Taps, Undercover, Junya Watanabe, Hysteric Glamor, Seriously there is so much more i cant remember but these are definitely the places that breaks your heart literally. The moment you stepped into Neighborhood. you are lost of words. You just simply do not know what to do anymore.. thats how hardcore it is.. just when you think the game cannot be stepped up, there comes bathing ape.. an amazing concept store that you cant help but just admire the area... and then just when you think that is it.. there comes Hysteric glamor... the interior is comparable to louis vuiton in singapore.. and then just when you think that is it... there comes Undercover.. with the amazing lightbulbs decor.. minimalist design... and the brilliance of Jun Takahashi's interior and futurism.. fuck. and just when you think this is it... you come to think to your self... Damn thats only an area here.... all gathered in one place... made for people to go crazy..

The whole day walking alone was enough todrain me out.. it was a reccese project and we are still up for Sunday where we are suppose to work at Kickslab event.. basically to hang out there and clinch as many sales as possible.. during my trip here, i must say I finally got excited the moment i stepped foot into Harajuku area...

Then we went back to revisit Shibuya at night.. this time the scene was totally differnt.. its like WTF this is Shibuya? A night metropolis where people are all over the place.. walking and looking awesome.. I cant tell you how much fun this place is.... I guess thats all I have to say for Day 1 ... Stay tuned for Day 2.

A New Trend says...

Yes, it is far too early to be polling potential 2012 matchups.  They are nearly meaningless at this stage (and for the next several stages) of the game.  But in the doldrums of August, these poll numbers are far too much fun to resist.

The Marist Poll is out with new numbers today showing President Obama soundly defeating former Gov. Sarah Palin 56 percent to 33 percent if they were the candidates in the 2012 election and if it was strangely held in August 2009.

There are a couple of clear and important warning signs for Gov. Palin in these early numbers.

She appears unable to create the near monolithic support among voters in her own party.  In this poll, Gov. Palin only receives support from 73% of Republicans.  Gov. Palin’s outsized popularity with a segment of the Republican Party may not necessarily translate to the entire Republican electorate in a general election.  By comparison, Sen. McCain garnered 90% of the Republican vote in his defeat to Barack Obama last November.

It also appears Gov. Palin has some continued work to do to turn her high profile resignation into a political plus.  61 percent of those polled said her resignation was a bad political move, according to Marist.  In fact, among Republicans, 51 percent believe stepping down from office the way she did may have potentially damaged her political future.

Perhaps the most devastating number in this poll for Sarah Palin is the basic measurement of her popularity with the American electorate.  Her numbers are upside down with 43 percent of respondents view her unfavorably, compared with 37 percent of respondents who hold a favorable view.

The Marist folks also took a look at the 2012 Republican field.  For all her name recognition and popularity among a segment of the Republican Party, Sarah Palin is in a three-way battle for 2012 GOP frontrunner.

Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney scores 21 percent support, Palin comes in at 20 percent, and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee gets 19 percent in the poll of Republican voters.

I hope to god Palin is the Republican nominee come 2012, the final death nail to an out of touch party that needs to go back and remember there used to be a president named Lincoln that actually ran as one of them

So, I took the train to work this morning as I often do every weekday. Took it from Harlem down to Tribeca area. As usual there are often a whole host of characters from your deviants, to your laughable, ugly, fat, stinky, hairy, pristine, positive, negative  and so on. You can literally  make a living chronicling the events and things you see in the New York Subways.

This morning I saw a strap hanger as we are called when not sitting down, bearing a tattoo on his forearm which read in big black letters "Never Give Up".  I had to do a double take to make sure this wasn't some stick on tattoo or part of some practical joke for some reality show. After looking around and not noticing any hidden camera's I realized, this fellow was not a figment of my imagination and stupid people don't exist in a make believe land of my imagination. I was really staring at one and the need to pinch of myself was clearly not needed.

Why would you get a tattoo of a saying or belief like that? Is it that hard to remember, and if so, do you really want to make it that huge so people can look at you and say, "gee, what retard school did this guy come from?"  I don't get it and yes maybe like most humans I'm reacting negatively to something i don't understand, however by no means am I criticizing this individual on the method of self expression to which i believe tattoos are. So it really begs the question, was this a form of self expression or just a giant note he needed to remember for the rest of his life? I don't know, just really confounded me as to why he got it.  Just the other day I saw a punk rocker with the Black Flag tattoo on his arm and it reminded me of this girl back in school named Phoebe, cute lil mama. Any way, I wanted to get that same Black Flag tattoo and she talked me out of it. She just simply said, "you never ever, ever, ever get a tattoo of a band on your self". Why I asked and she asked if I was in the band to which I say no and that was it.

Another Thursday, another night spent at the Silent Movie Theatre for their Post-Punk Junk series.

Last night was a grab bag of oddity videos.  Apparently they connected with a man who taped anything punk related from the 70's on up so we were treated to several news reports on punk, Fear on SNL, Suicide performing Ghost Rider, etc.  Oh, and this...
param>
</object>
And they had the first two reels of Penelope Spheeris' 1981 documentary The Decline Of Western Civilization which I had yet to see and pray I see the rest of.  The documentary featured the Germs, X, Catholic Discipline, and Fear, among others.  I had seen and loved Decline part II: The Metal Years and I'm confident a full viewing of Decline part I will be just as good.

One band featured prominently in both Decline and the video clips was Black Flag.  In my own opinion, when it comes to West Coast punk, or hardcore in general, there's Black Flag and then there's everyone else.  All the stories I read, all the footage are confirmed by what I hear when I put on an album as powerful as Damaged.  Their shows and albums demanded an outbreak of controversy and violence.  Seek out Henry Rollins' book Get In The Van or the book on CD read by Rollins himself which details everything to perfection.

There was an excellent clip from an Entertainment Tonight that discussed MCA's refusal to distribute the Damaged album.  It featured interviews with the band, including a baby-faced Henry Rollins, and ended with an A capella version of Rise Above barked by all the members into the camera, scaring the crap out of the correspondents when they cut back to the studio.  Oh, if only I were old enough and aware then to be a part of it!

Six Pack was always one of my favorite Flag songs and I've always been more partial to the Dez Cadena sung version.  Get ready to pogo, then run outside and punch a cop!
