strikerstill1-1

It’s finally here! I had a chance to play with my new Blackberry Stratus (9100) AKA Striker AKA Pearl 2 and I have to tell you that is fantastic. It might be a little too tiny, but the phone is very (and when I say very I really mean it) pretty, slick, sexy, and it says “Business” all over it.

The overall feel of the phone in your hand is almost the same as holding an iPod Nano. I just can’t imagine of a better Blackberry to put in your pocket for hours, it’s just the perfect size. The trackpad is a great addition to the looks of the phone, making the lines of it that much slicker than any other Blackberry on the market. The back of the phone is extremely similar to the second generation Blackberry Storm, which is a pretty good looking phone itself, but everything in a smaller package. Another addition to the hardware is the “Media Buttons”, which immediately makes me think that this device will be directed to a younger crowd of Blackberry users. The phone is very light but at the same time it feels solid in your hand. Texting is as easy as it gets (as long as you are used to the Pearl Suretype Keyboard or even the Storm’s reduced keyboard, and the new/higher resolution screen is just gorgeous (not as good as the one on the Storm/Tour/Bold, but definitely a nice upgrade from the “already old” Pearl. Another nice addition to this second generation Pearl is the 3.2 MP Camera with flash.

The software I’m running on the phone is at a very early stage (v5.0.0.350), but is running very smoothly already. The only problems I have with it is the camera app, which doesn’t work yet, but the video camera is running perfectly. Because the OS Platform is 6.0 I can’t download any apps yet, but the closer we get to its release the more compatible the apps will be. The phone works great on 3G, even though its running on “AT&T’s Full of Apps Network”, so that is a great sign.

My guess for its release would be around April, 2010. That is just a guess and as soon as I hear something more solid I will let you know immediately. Because of the 3G bands in the phone I can tell for a fact that this phone will be out for AT&T and Rogers, but sadly I haven’t heard of a CDMA version yet or even a GSM version for T-Mobile here in the US.

Overall I love the phone, and to all of you that love their Pearls you are going to absolutely fall in love with this one. If you want to discuss or have any more questions about this beauty don’t forget to visit the Blackberry 9100 Forum.

So being broke this year didn't mean not getting a new gadget, as @Amazon has a promotion running today on cell phones. I got a brand new BlackBerry Storm2 9550 top of the line model for $0.99! That's less than a buck, plus NO sales tax! IF you were to (and you cant) find a deal like this at a retail store (the lowest I've found is $179.99) you still have to pay sales tax, which is a hefty number in Los Angeles, racking up at about 10% depending which city in the County you live in. This truly is the best bargain in cell phones Ive come across in a long time and they have other offers available. I will miss Sprint, but @Palms lack of build quality and lackadaisical responses to major issues plaguing the Pre & Pixis are just too much. The FINAL straw in my cell phone camels back follows: I arrived at my best friends house for Thanksgiving Dinner yesterday at 1:30PM & my @Palm #Pre battery which was FULLY charged was EMPTY by 6:30PM after taking a couple of pics, tweeting and showing my phone to a friend. Un-Frakking acceptable for a smart phone which I paid $200 for plus accessories. This phone STILL cant record video, doesn't have auto focus for the camera, has ZERO quality games and social media apps. Your loss @Palm. I'm happy to pay more for excellent service with @VZWOffers and get kick ass reliable service, high speeds, great build quality and access to hundreds of applications that I can truly use for my lifestyle.

I will update with an unboxing and a review of my phone (which is mine, not a PR unit)

Mercedes-Benz is mbacing the iPhone for it's entire fleet. The new service will be available for all new Mercedes models. The mbrace service integrates the car with a remote control system via your iPhone or Blackberry. There is a special iPhone app that you can get for free by clicking here.

The service allows you to lock/unlock your car from a distance, find it on a map, or contact the closest Mercedes dealer.

The system even has "Automatic Collision Notification" which is described as:

In the event your airbags deploy or your seatbelt Emergency Tensioning Devices are activated, Automatic Collision Notification will immediately relay your location to the Mercedes-Benz Emergency Response Center and attempt to establish voice communication between you and an mbrace Customer Specialist. If you request assistance or are unable to respond, the Customer Specialist will notify the appropriate emergency service provider and stay on the line until help arrives.

The mbrace service also features an SOS button that connects you to a mbrace Customer Specialist that has been trained to respond to emergency situations. Other features include stolen vehicle location assistance, automatic alarm notification, roadside assistance connection, and crisis alert.

I didn't leave the house anticipating that I would have a new best friend upon arriving back at home.

I really went down to get a haircut, but the wait was so long, I moved on.  I parked a fair ways down the street, so I started walking back toward the car.

Then the Verizon Wireless store jumped out in front of me and wouldn't let me pass without going in.  Fine, I thought, this would be a great opportunity for me to check out the Droid again.  (You can read my first impression here)

It wasn't long before a sales rep found my weak side and started probing with the the right questions.  Before long, he informed me that I was eligible for a phone upgrade and that the contract was a non-issue.

Then he really got heavy, he put a Blackberry Bold next to the Droid and started pointing out the features:

Video:  The Blackberry seemed tiny and not designed for video.  The Droid was theatre like and the sound awesome (it has a real speaker!) Droid won.

Email: The Blackberry wins for execution, but the Droid is designed to work with my Gmail account.  Access to my calendar and email is just a click away.  Droid narrowly won this one.

Web Browser:  The rep informed me that the browser on the Droid was more robust than the Blackberry, which he said was an add-on. Droid was designed for web browsing, so it wins hands down.

Camera:  Droid has 5mp camera vs a 3mp camera on the Blackberry.  I think the Blackberry wins for quality here, the Droid camera just doesn't take as sharp of a picture as the Blackberry, despite the larger censor size.  Blackberry wins.

Apps: The sales rep pointed to the "Market" icon on the Droid and asked me to find a few apps that I liked.  Then he asked me to find a few apps that were similar for Blackberry.  I couldn't and discovered that the open source Android OS has a lot more apps available to it.  The rep smiled.  Droid Wins.

I then asked about price.  For $75/mo, I can have full functionality, including 3G, wifi, unlimited data and text, and email.  Sold!

So that is how a Droid came home with me.  It is my new best friend and I am happy that I adopted one.  In my mind, the iPhone's market just shrunk.

Grab your new friend and buy a Droid!

Note: If the ringer volume is quiet and you miss calls, reboot it.  Turn it off using the power button and then turn it back on.  Ringer volume will be back to normal.

Seesmic has brought its Twitter client to the mobile arena as well with the launch of clients for the Android and BlackBerry platforms. Both apps are available for free
Excerpt from Mashable.

This is great. An alternative to UberTwitter for my BlackBerry, though native RIM application for Twitter that I'm waiting for. Btw, no Seesmic for iPhone?

T-Mobile Complete package is a pre-packaged no-annual contract pre-paid plan for BlackBerrys with 4 phones to choose from (1 available now) starting at $59.99 which includes the first month free. There are a couple unlimited plans starting from $50/month.
Excerpt from BerryReview.

This is gonna be first BlackBerry prepaid plan in US. Indonesia was the first country to implement prepaid plan and proven to be highly effective as a way to penetrate the market and increase BlackBerry market share in Indonesia. Could this implementation in US be as effective as in Indonesia?
