Lower cholesterol may lessen risk of some cancers: http://ow.ly/B3tp beatcancer health nutrition wellness

unhatched says...

In 2009, more than 192,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and more than 27,000 men will die from the disease. One new case occurs every 2.7 minutes and a man dies from prostate cancer every 19 minutes.

It is estimated that there are more than 2 million American men currently living with prostate cancer. Just say that out loud, two million men. If we put all the men in the U.S. with prostate cancer into one state, they would be the 36th biggest state.

It is the most common non-skin cancer in America, affecting 1 in 6 men. A non-smoking man is more likely to develop prostate cancer than he is to develop colon, bladder, melanoma, lymphoma and kidney cancers combined. In fact, a man is 35% more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer than a woman is to be diagnosed with breast cancer.

While genetics play a role in whether or not someone is more likely to be diagnosed, there are significant health and lifestyle choices that men make to make themselves more susceptible to the disease.

So how about some handy tips from the Mayo Clinic on things you can do to help prevent prostate cancer?

Say not now to the cow
- A diet high in saturated fats, much like the fats found in red meat, can increase your risk. Opt for a leaner protein like chicken or fish instead.

Portion control
- This handy guide from WebMD tells you what the suggested portions are for various foods. Researchers have not established a direct link between obesity and incidence of prostate cancer. However, obesity might affect levels of hormones related to prostate cancer risk. It may also increase the risk of dying of prostate cancer. By eating the proper amount of the RIGHT foods at meals, you can not only help prevent prostate cancer but also maybe lose some unsightly pounds, fatty.

Eat like a rabbit - A diet high in fruits and vegetables has been linked to a lower risk of various kinds of cancer. Foods high in folate — a B vitamin found in spinach, asparagus and some beans — may be helpful. Also, eating vegetables with diindolylmethane — a nutrient found in cruciferous foods such as broccoli, kale and cabbage — might protect against prostate cancer. Studies show mixed results about whether lycopene — an antioxidant found in tomatoes — lowers prostate cancer risk.

Get hippie with your food - Whole grains, rather than refined grains, give you the total benefit of many natural plant compounds that can lower your risk of cancer. Opt for whole-grain foods, such as brown rice, quinoa and whole-wheat bread. Limit sweets and salt and other processed foods. Live the natural life!

Drink alcohol in moderation - Yes, red wine is good for you. . .just not when you polish off 2 bottles of Merlot in one sitting. Generally, this means no more than two drinks a day for men. Studies show that regular heavy drinking increases the risk of aggressive prostate cancer.

Exercise regularly - Regular exercise for at least 30 minutes at a time and at least 3 days per week is essential for prostate and total body health. Not only does regular exercise help you to maintain a healthy weight, it also has been shown that men who exercise regularly have overall lower rates of cancer, tolerate cancer treatments far better, and survive their cancer at higher rates.

My beard's coming along quite nicely - I suspect a neck trim will need to be done before the big meeting I have next Tuesday, but the rest of it shall go untouched for the next 25 days.

As I write this, Team International Sexy is 10 strong with $700 to our name so far. We've got some tricks up our sleeves that promise we'll have some great contributions by the end of the month. I'm also working on a design for a shirt that we can give to people that donate over a certain dollar amount. . .after all, who doesn't like shirts?

Oh yea. . .

Damn nudists.
