Another year, another VMAs, and a good riddance to that! To get things out of the way beforehand, let me just say that this: If you walk into this business not thinking that none will protest against you, you need to get the fuck out. There will always be your fans, but there will always be the haters will do anything to get the spotlight off you to enjoy their five minutes and to point out the one who deserves the praise.
Taylor Swift came into our world as a girl who just wanted to sing her songs to the world, her fame only moving forward when she got involved with Joe Jonas. Yes, she can sing, but we only care about her because of her affiliation with Disney, and if it wasn't because of them pushing her to get onboard with Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers, she'd be nowhere right now. She's only popular because of the drama that surrounds her.
She doesn't even fit with the country music genre to be honest. Yes, it may have fiddles and cello, but compare it to other acts, and it's pretty much in the middle of nowhere. She doesn't seem like someone that really knows what they want either, singing about being a princess and finding her romeo in one song, another going on about how she's the tomboy of the school. Plus, she looks like a Barbie doll, where's the sense in that?
Now, Beyonce has been in the limelight for many years, and she seems very happy. She's not being photographed everyday looking a complete waste, her marriage seems to be alright (personally, I salute anyone that can handle the mess that is Jay-Z), and she separated herself from just "being the main singer in Destiny's Child." She rose to fame because of the effort she put in, not because of the 'pretty boy' she dated.
As for Kanye West, well, let's just say that that 'trying to be polite' thing didn't exactly work. I'm pretty much thinking that he thought that the first few minutes were whack and just getting worse and he didn't want to just sit there for another hour and wanted to do something to get away. I don't know, I wouldn't have liked to be there watching Janet Jackson imitating her dead brother either. That, or he thinks the same way as I do, that a 'pretty blonde girl' that doesn't do anything for herself deserves a hard-to-get award like that. And yes, in my eyes, a Grammy award is easier to get than a moonman. Why? Because MTV is a popular vote versus the Grammys who's voters actually know a thing or two about real music.
I think Beyonce just wanted people to not put her down in the media after what Kanye said. She knows that it's a very hard industry, that some people think she's complete rubbish, and that her daddy does everything for her. She did however say that she's been on stage before and already had her moment and wanted Taylor Swift to have that same experience. She also knows that it's a popular vote by the fans and nothing else.
Moving on, I think it was nice to see Madonna open up the ceremony with her speech. I didn't recognize her at first, because to be honest, she's usually in leotards and all that. It was great to see her without the fake British accent and talking realistic about her memories of meeting up with Michael for the first time. She put a lot of blame in the fact that she drifted away from him, swell as many of his other closest friends and entered into a world where he had no one to call a friend. Yes, she has her own troubles and is seen to be too strict and crazy, but I think she deserves her title in the music world.
I still don't believe that it was great for the Jacksons to go up stage and do a tribute to Michael, but they're getting their five minutes of last fame and that's all that really matters to them. It felt more like a spoof of him though, with Janet singing like him and everyone dancing to all his songs. It was good, but I think it needed one of those Oscar type 'in memory' instead.
I officially don't like Russell Brand anymore, he seems to have gotten all his success into his head and used the awards ceremony for putting out his thoughts. I for one did not like his quote about Americans letting people die instead of giving them free healthcare like the NHS in the UK. Even though I agree with it, I didn't like the fact that he put it out to the public, especially to a young audience who really haven't got a clue about politics in general. The majority of young people think Obama is cool because he's black, they know nothing about his political beliefs, just like they don't know that downloading music illegally harms the music industry.
Never seeing really any Green Day performance, except when they did Live 8, I wasn't really impressed. The calling up people to come up stage was pretty ridiculous too, you could no longer see them and all you really heard were all the girls screaming. It was a stupid way to make a boring song more exciting.
I don't like how they put acts on the side now, it's not fair to the people that want to see their favorite bands then not get to because they're just there for filler. I mean, Russell Brand didn't talk this much this year, you could have had him fill the spots! Daniel Merriweather is great and I didn't think he needed to be treated like The Ting Tings were last year. Muse are great, but come on, they didn't deserve to be showcased when they have absolutely no hits here and hardly any radio stations play them. I liked Lady Gaga's performance though, not something I'd pay to see though. Someone pointed out that Beyonce wears too many outfits that are the same sparkle and grey but in different styles and I have to agree with them, she was great though. The rest was pretty boring to be honest, the same annoying stars with the same annoying comments. Some took the time to congratulate Taylor Swift after Kanye West's outburst just before she took to the streets to sing.
Anyway, I could be here all night complaining about all the little things I noticed, how robotic people were, how dresses were totally cheap and tacky, and other things, so I'll leave you with the official winners list.
