Who's taken my fur coat? Vets baffled by bald bears with mystery condition

By Daily Mail Reporter

Last updated at 12:37 PM on 05th November 2009

You'd have thought a fur coat would have been the ultimate bear necessity.

But not for the unfortunate Dolores who has lost all her body hair and has just been left with a few tufts around her head.

Vets have been left baffled by the condition of the bespectacled bear, who lives at a zoo in Leipzig.

Bare-faced: Dolores has a condition which means she has gone totally bald

And Dolores isn't the only one. The sudden hair loss has affected all female bears at the zoo.

Some experts believe it could be due to a genetic defect though the animals do not seem to be suffering from any other affliction.

The bears, which originate from South America,  normally have fluffy dark brown fur and would now be growing a thicker fur coat to keep warm during the winter.

Wrinkly: All the female bears at the zoo have the same condition. They have become a bit of a crowd puller

Where's my fur coat gone? Dolores still has a ring of fur around her face. She lethal claws are clearly visible

But instead they have developed nasty rashes and inflammations on their skin.

Unfortunately for the bears, their lack of hair has been pulling in the crowds who want to see want to see the wrinkly animals.

Hopefully the zoo will be turning up the heat in their enclosure.

Full head of hair: These is how Dolores would have looked before she lost her fur. The spectacled bears have a thick, dark coat normally

Here is the best thing I have read in the NYT for quite some time:

It's got everything - weird foreigness, implications of infidelity, and bears.

Ok, an update on the two happy bears.

Firstly their names are Mischa and Mascha and were a gift from the wife of the Russian President, Svetlana Medvedeva. Secondly, it is not part of the zoo as I incorrectly mentioned in my previous post. It is a Bear Park. Six thousand square meters of riverside accomodation just for the two of them. Details here in French only, sorry.

In fairness though, previous bears have not been so fortunate. They were accomodated for 142 years in a Bear Pit. Not so luxurious. A little history here in English.

So back to the creature comforts for Mischa and Mascha. Get the whole news story here.

And another story about the budget being blown!

Why is he so happy?

In the current economic climate it really makes sense to invest in infrastructure projects. In Bern, the capital of Switzerland the local authorities have decided against boring bridges, roads, school, clinics, hospitals and child care centers. They have come up with a brilliant way to spend CHF 24,000,000. (That's about $26,000,000.)

And it is? Of course, a new home for two bears in it's zoo. Now don't get me wrong here. I'm really happy for the bears. They must have got their application for a first home owner's grant just perfect. (That they are the symbol on the Bern flag helped too I suppose.) In addition, their new home has been finished just in time for winter. Very comforting for them as they prepare for hibernation.

Well, this is the catch really. The price the bears pay for their new state funded, river side, seven story, luxury penthouse is that people can look at them going about their bear business. So, for this deal top come off, people need to be able to see these bears. I'm sure you are with me here.

Yes. What happens when they hibernate? Will they be slugged with arrears for not keeping up with their end of the bargain? Or will we just be happy with adding a bear in Photoshop when we get home?
