Taylor's first 8th grade basketball game!
Also lurking in the field is No. 5 Villanova, an upstart Final Four team last season that has the perimeter prowess to get back. In a relatively lopsided bracket, Tech could face Villanova in a semifinal game Friday, if the Jackets beat Dayton and Villanova beats George Mason.
About the Flyers
They’re 5-4 against ranked teams since 2007-08. UD averaged nearly 14 turnovers per game last season but had just six in the final exhibition game against Northern Kentucky and only nine in the 90-80 season-opening win against Creighton. Chris Wright appears to have elevated his game, making 9-of-12 shots against the Bluejays, including both 3-point attempts. Sub Chris Johnson had 18 points and 15 rebounds in the opener.
Got to give Shannon Brown credit for going to the basket the way he did. If he made this dunk, I would have run around the house screaming...naked...just like my nephew. BUT, he didn't. You know I'm not a fan of the Lakers at all so posting this should be no surprise to anyone, but Brown is more than capable of getting up and dunking on somone, or for that matter blocking them, like West from the Hawks, on a vicious block. This kid is a freak, I want to see him in the Dunk Contest this year!!!
A new era begins (albeit one year) at Kentucky as John Wall hits the game winner vs Miami OH. This team is really enjoyable to watch (probably as much as the "Unforgettables"), because they are committed to doing whatever it takes to reach their potential. They, we (Big Blue Nation), have a long way to go in such a short time - this is a special team, stay tuned...

I know this isn't technically the first game of the season for the MSU men's basketball team. The record shows they beat "Florida Gulf Coast" last Friday, but tonight's game versus Gonzaga at Breslin is the real season-opener. I can't help but put on my old State News hat and mash out a little season preview.
(But first: I'm pretty sure these early season cupcakes aren't actually team schools at all. I think what happens is someone from the NCAA heads over to one of the IM buildings on campus, finds the 10 tallest/most skilled guys playing pickup games that afternoon, then hands them generic uniforms and has them take the court. Saves having to pay another university half of the gate receipts. Just a thought.) The Spartans should be able to handle the Zags tonight, as the boys from Washington have 10 (!!) new players suiting up this year. But the schedule turns typically Izzonian from there, with games against Florida, North Carolina and Texas all on the horizon. They won't come through those games unscathed, but the payoff comes during March Madness. My quick thoughts on the 2009-10 Spartans: This team should be very, very good. The only things that can hold them back are injuries and expectations. The season's barely started and Tom Izzo's team already has a list of boo-boos that would eclipse some football teams. As for lofty expectations, the Spartans may feel the pressure of repeating their championship game appearance last year – not to mention looking around at each other and saying, "Damn, we should win it all this year." Why should they win it all? How about a loaded backcourt, which is the most important part of the college game these days. Kalin Lucas is one of the best point guards in the country, and Korie Lucious is almost as good and even quicker. Chris Allen is a sniper from the wings and Durrell Summers can score and soar. Any team with four guards of that caliber is going to win at least 25 games. Up front, the team is younger but has some intriguing pieces. Draymond Green is the key – he might have the best mix of basketball acumen and leadership skills the Spartans have seen since Earvin Johnson stopped by campus for a year. He's a couple inches short to be a future NBA star, but this guy is made to play either forward or even a little center in the NCAA. Great passer, great hands, nose for the ball, tough inside. The more he's on the court, the better the Spartans will be. Add in the raw talent of Delvon Roe and Derrick Nix to bang down low and the Goran Sutton-like potential of Garrick Sherman, and MSU will be fine up front – but the team will need minutes from eternally disappointing seven-footer Tom Herzog against teams with good centers. So far, he's been a waste of a scholarship. All that's enough to give the Spartans a shot, but there's one more wild card: Raymar Morgan. As a freshman, he looked like he would be in the NBA after his sophomore season. Tall, athletic, able to shoot the three ... but you can't count on him. He gets hurt, he drifts away during big games, he makes me crazy. But he's in a perfect situation to succeed this year. If the team needed him to go out and put up 20 points a game, that would be trouble. But with so much other talent, and with Green and Lucas as team leaders, Morgan can fly under the radar. Plus, Morgan finally earned some toughness points when he played through a broken nose during March Madness last year. If Morgan's senior season is as inconsistent as his first three in East Lansing, the Spartans are still a top-10 team with a shot at a title. But if Morgan finds his groove and plays anywhere near his potential, MSU is scary good and a favorite to cut down the nets in Indianapolis next April.
