"Passengers on a Batavia Air plane scheduled to fly from Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport to Surabaya were sent into panic when they saw smoke coming out of the back of their plane before their scheduled takeoff on Thursday morning.

Batavia Air Corporate Secretary, Edi Haryanto told the Jakarta Globe that the passengers were panic stricken and forcefully opened the emergency door.

“They opened the emergency exit and came out of the plane using the slide,” Edi said.

Edi said that the smoke coming out of the engine was an ordinary occurance during the process to prepare for take-off.

“It’s just an ordinary thing,” he said."

We left Lombok for a couple of nights on one of the three small islands on the NW coast of Lombok. We stayed on Gili Air (pronounced 'ire') which is the nearest to the mainland. The day after we arrived we chartered a glass bottom boat with 2 crew for the day. Firstly we went to the 2nd island (Gili Meno) where I was dropped off as I wanted to visit the bird park in the middle of the island while Lisa went snorkelling. Then after a swim we headed to the third island, Gili Trawangan for lunch. We visited about 4 snorkelling locations around the islands and saw quite a few turtles, some very close by. Off the shore of Gili Air the fish would nibble at my feet which was an unusual sensation. They also swam to look at my hands a couple had a nibble at them too. That night we talked to the hotel people and they lent us a dvd player. I watched the movie "Moon". Watching a widescreen movie recorded in 5.1 on a mono 14" 4:3 screen wasn't quite an Imax-like experience but it's Indonesia so..

The trip from Gili Air to Kuta took 12 hours. Small boat to Lombok, van to the port, 5 hours on a huge car and truck carrying ferry and then a van ride to Kuta. It wasn't too bad all in all. We were expecting much worse, especially as it was pointed out to me, prior to the ferry departing they were playing the theme to Titantic.

We're now in Kuta, Bali for the last couple of days. Off to Singapore early on Sat morning for a couple of days then a couple of days in Malaysia before heading to the next semi-major leg being Vietnam. We'll start in the north and work our way south.

The Balinese understand the importance of balance & expressions are everywhere in attitude, daily offerings, food & delight.
Often, life imitates art & reading "Eat Pray Love" was all the inspiration I needed to plan a holiday.
And, just as often, life is so much sweeter than art or a chapter in a book...Bali is no exception.
Balinese believe balance in life is the key to happiness & now I believe it, too!

Peaceful coastal village of Candidnasa was tranquil place & ideal location for some off shore scuba but I found inland Ubud & overlooking rice paddies to be most mystical place

Janet DeNeffe's cooking school at Honey Moon Guest House-Ubud was amazing from the food to the stories of life in Bali.
Janet's book "Fragrant Rice" http://ow.ly/BzPs  is an engaging love story of meeting a Balinese man & living a life in Bali including opening of 2 wonderful restaurants, Casa Luna & Indo (Indo has incredible bucolic views of rice paddies & food is amazing - jump on scooter & 5 minutes from central Ubud).

Bali Spirit www.balispirit.com  was a perfect place for yoga practice & the cafe was ideal for meeting yogis and locals.  Lovely waitress invited me to her brother's wedding & I joyously attended.

Bali was mystical & the spirit will always be with me.

One of our valued guests at Alila Manggis, who was passionate about Scuba Diving, recently wrote a review for us.

” Early November 2009 I came to Bali to do some diving.

The main thing I would have liked to see was the famous Mola Mola or oceanic sunfish which Bali is famous for.I knew I was a little late on the season for a sunfish encounter, but I didn’t mind.My view on diving is that one should not chase around species to see, nature will present them as a gift to you when the time is right.

Living up to this philosophy staying at the Allila Mangis resort is not so hard. You can feel the pulse of nature throughout the place. Besides of that, the whole complex has the same Zen feeling to it as the one I look for while diving.

It is a place to come home to when you’re tired after diving and just relax.I was curious what nature would present to me this time. The first gift I got was the Mantis shrimp. This colourful small lobster is also nicknamed thumb-breaker. It got this reputation from being able to hit very hard with its small claws. While taking the picture I was very careful of not having the housing smashed. It was the first time I ever got to see the rare lobster.

Then the great Barracuda came along. The large predator fish measured at least one and a half meter in length. I could come very close to it, an unforgettable experience.

As if this was not enough, we stumbled upon the rare Ghost pipefish. This very small creature mimics seaweed in order to mislead fish hunting for it. I had seen this rare creature before, but the clear waters of Bali offered me my first opportunity to take a good picture of it.

At that point the 2 most spectacular encounters were still up nature’s sleeve.

First I was totally amazed by an encounter with an enormous school of Trevally fish. The school moves around like a chaotic system. Watching is was like being in a nature movie. It cannot be believed how happy I felt.

Then it was time for the cherry on the cake. An encounter with the one species one has to see to believe it is for real. I got to dive with Manta Ray.I got to see 3 of them together and I got to see them really close. It was like seeing bionic stealth fighter planes going over my head… simply amazing.

And what about the Mola Mola ? I guess it wasn’t time for me to receive that present yet.

But I will get back to Bali again for that one; maybe time will be right then, maybe not. That next time Allila Mangis will be my home again.”

Peter Voet, October 2009.

We caught up with fair-trade jewelry pioneer, Kimarie Burnette of Kimarie Designs to learn more about what inspires her and why she uses fair-trade labor from Bali.

1.  How did you get started in making jewelry?

I traveled to Bali and fell in love with the art and the people.

2.  Sustainability in the jewelry sector is pretty rare, what inspired you to go fair-trade?

My friend told me people were dying refining metal in Indonesia because of the toxic chemicals, we then set about learning how to refine our own metal and establish best practices.

3.  What one thing would you like all jewelry shoppers to know about traditional jewelry?

I'd like people to know that jewelry making in Bali is a centuries old tradition that is handed down from generation to generation. All our jewelry is hand fabricated with a lot of love.

4.  Who are you outside of the founder and designer of Kimarie Designs?

A mom and wife and big fan of sushi.

5.  Who would you be most thrilled to know is wearing your jewelry?

My friends.

6.  What is the experience of working in Bali like?

Working in Bali has been amazing. My goldsmiths now our the kids of my previous set of goldsmiths that are retired and fishing now. It has been wonderful to see them grow up get married and now have to enter “the real world” have a job raise kids etc. My aesthetic and constitution seems to fit Bali like a glove. I love the organic wild and at the same time laid back and very fatalistic tones of their culture. I am able to understand it and work within it very well.

Eleven and a half hours after leaving Auckland I arrived in Bali. It was 33C with a light breeze. I had a visa and therefore didn't have to queue with all the others in the VOA (visa on arrival) queue.

The driving is crazy. Cars and motorcycles overtaking each other with little regard to lanes or even one way streets.

The hotel is nice with plenty of tall trees, a pond, captive birds and a pool all in a large courtyard area.

We walked to the site of the 2002 Bali bombing. There are dances there every night of Galungan.

Today is the last day of Galungan holiday. Many businesses have been shut so it'll be interesting to see how busy it is tomorrow.

We have bought air tickets to Maumere on Flores island for the 25th. We may spend the next few days in central and northern Bali.
