As the number of apps continues to grow, the company will needs to focus on the discoverability of the applications. App discovery is vital for developers who need to sell applications in order to make money. If they don’t make money, then they shift loyalties to other platforms including Android, which is not going to be a pushover.

So what is Apple going to do next? It’s going to increase the “personal” quotient on its App Store. Think the genius feature on steroids! More app recommendations and more automatic discovery of apps based on our usage might be in our future.

Om, start keeping track of AppsFire

update: read the awesome coverage on TechCrunch, ReadWriteWeb and TheNextWeb

Today AppsFire is happy to announce the launch of the App Star awards in partnership with SFR/AppliStore, LeWeb, TechCrunch, ReadWriteWeb and The NextWeb.

★★★★★

What is this and why is this coo l?

There are a lot of developers out there working on new apps and the App Star award is the first app contest for Apps that are not yet in the App Store. Yes, we want to highlight brilliant and interesting apps and put them under the spotlight before they even reach the App Store.

Someone around us called it the Off-Broadway competition :)

The idea is very simple: if you have an app coming (legit, no jailbreak), submit a clip of 30 secs on Youtube with a demo. Will select 30 of the best (10 in each category: games, entertainment, utility and other) and our uber-Jury will review each one and point to 3 winners.

The details of the timeline and rules are here. But basically we'll open submission on november 23rd, right now only pre-registration (here) to be notified are open. We'll announce the winners on stage at LeWeb conference, the largest web conference in Europe, December 9th.

What will winners get out of this?

We wanted to give a symbolic reward to each winner which will get a check of $1500 and free ad campaignw with participating partners (once the app reaches the app store).

But beyond the reward, we believe this event will bring recognition to the winners (and pre-selected candidates too) by putting them under prestigious spotlights and by being reviewed by a prestigious set of people composing our Jury which are some of the finest worldwide experts about the iPhone.

For information All videos demos submitted will be g on our video channel and users will also be able to rate

The Uber-Jury

Michael Arrington, Robert Scoble, Marshall Kirkpatrick, Louis Gray, Loic Le Meur, Daniel Brusilosvky, Zee (The NextWeb), Jean Francois Caillard (SFR), Patrick Jordan (Just Another iPhone blog) and many more will be part of our jury. A real dream team. Yes, in spite of their busy agendas,  they will review your app, if you are selected.

A nice way to start, isn't it?

Why did we create this event?

AppsFire is all about discovering great apps. We love to see users sharing their apps, and we love to see developers using our tools to improve the way they get discovered. But we believe that great apps should be able to get discovered even before they reach the app store. As a matter of fact, many developers like to tease about their work (rightly so) before they launch. Discovering apps should be fun and rewarding.

We hope this event will contribute to help a little.

And why not say it in music! Here is the Rap Star

We are very excited about this event and we wanted to have something extra fun for it. Our friends at Mouthoff (an app we LOVE) have created a fantastic musical clip on the App Star. A great rap song on the theme "Are you an App Star or a Rap Star". I am sure you'll find it fun and will want to share it.

That's All, Good luck to all participants!!

Oh yes, and if you like it, Twit it here!

Big thanks

We'd like to thank SFR and LeWeb for supporting this event. Another big thanks goes to Olivier Turbis for the gorgeous design our the App Star page. And finally an extra thanks goes to Renate Nyborg for the original idea and contribution to the App Star/Rap Star clip (big thanks to UsTwo also!)

What is the meaning of progress if so many people on earth are still not even able to drink clean water?  Did you know that 1 billion people on earth don't have access to clean drinking water? Well yes this is the case and this is what charity: water tries to make us all aware of.

We like a lot what this non-profit organization is doing. And this is why we decided, with your help, to support them. How? and what will you have to do?

First let us tell you a little secret. Each time you click on an Appsfire link and buy an app, we get a little commission from Apple (we disclose that fact in our site). As a matter of fact, a lot of blogs and site related to the iPhone and Apple product work that way [although it is not always very visible]. To be precise and transparent we get exactly 5% from the value of a purchasing session (4% if in Europe)

So what are we going to do?

During the month of October 2009 100% of our proceeds will be donated to charity: water. Yes 100%

What do you have to do? Just share your iPhone apps using Appsfire

  • Either by sharing apps you already own (using our desktop or iphone app)
  • or by sharing apps you don't own yet, by using our link or widget generator
  • if you are an iPhone developer you can just replace your traditional iTunes link with an AppsFire (even if you app is free)
  • or finally simply re-sharing/retweeting this post or any of AppsFire iPhone widget

Each time someone will buy an iPhone app thanks to you, we'll get a commission we will donate entirely to charity: water. That simple

To make it clear: You Share Apps > Your friend buy Apps > Appsfire gets a commission > We donate 100% to charity: water

By Sharing your iPhone apps, you will help us contribute to charity: water (and remember also that 100% of all donations to charity: water goes to the cause directly)

I am sure you are starting to look at your iPhone differently now

Want to try? Start now

PS: just realized that appsFIRE for charity: WATER is kind of awkward :) but all good elements should meet no?

Sometimes we also like to talk on this blog about ourselves :) We received so much feedback that it is hard to know where to start but we decided to start by improving a little our widgets

What's new?
  • We created a new friendly way to embed them on your blog or your site with an iFrame (along with the traditional script code)
• We improved the display of the sharing options (now appearing in expendable mode)
  • We simplified the way stats regarding the AppMix is appearing (1 line is better :) )

Soon we'll add a choice of background and a few stats so you can know what happen with the widget itself. We have a few surprises that are coming also that will change the way you get informed about apps. Stay tuned.

And remember you can create an iPhone widget in 1 click, even if you don't have Appsfire and want to share your own apps. It is very simple. Check here

Hope you like it!

We have received such a positive feedback on our VIP discovery section on the iPhone that we decided to introduce now on the web on Appsfire.com/VIPs

The VIP is a selection of web celebrities who agreed to share their favorite iPhone apps and that we decided to showcase with you.

You'll find in this area Loic Le Meur, Jeff Clavier, Louis Gray, Marshall Kirkpatrick, Corvida, Orli, Robin Wauters, Zee and many more...

The other cool thing we are introducing is our brand new short URL for sharing apps MyAp.ps/Name that is available for now for our VIPs and soon for more

Easy to remember and to share

We have a lot more coming...but enough for now :)

We were growing already very nicely (thank you all btw) but the TechCrunch effect / our last report + a couple of secret changes in our backyard have accelerated everything. The sudden growth is so strong that it actually hides the previous growth we were already experiencing...

now we need to digest that...

ps: this is a real screenshot from our internal growth.
