I was born in Alabama when my parents were studying at Tuskegee University and we also lived on campus when they were at Oklahoma State University, where my brother was born. Education is the foundation of my life and ever since the womb, I've always been around teachers and classrooms. It's funny how it is difficult for me to remember the houses, but I have vivid memories of where we lived depending on where my parents were teaching at the time. Garvey Maceo Comprehensive, Jamaica School of Agriculture, Dinthill Tehnical...they are as clear in my mind as day.

In August 2009, I traveled to Fayette, Alabama with my family. This is my father's side of the family. I never really enjoyed going to this family reunion when I was younger. I found out on this trip that it is not about the youth but about the rich stories of our elders. As the years pass by, family members pass away. I decided to document family members as a way to share with future generations. From this small clip, I have been inspired to do a documentary on my family to make sure that we preserve the stories and learn more about who we are. We learn this by knowing our family. Let me know what you think!

From April 2008 to April 2009 we ate only food grown or raised in the state of Alabama. We embarked on this gastronomical adventure to focus on sustainable farming and to make a case for a revitalization of our state's rural economy. We filmed the whole process, and now we're putting together a documentary.

i hope they actually make this documentary available in a way i can see it, like netflix.

With college football season just around the corner (my apologies to the smaller schools that have already opened their seasons), it's time to take a crack at a few predictions.  I begin with this post, providing a prediction of the season of the Alabama Crimson Tide (my alma mater).  In my next post, I will provide predictions for the Weber State Wildcats (my employer).

Virginia Tech (at Atlanta, GA)

Alabama again opens the season in Atlanta against a Top 10 team from the ACC.  Last year, the Tide shocked much of the college football world by rolling over Clemson.  Alabama will not, after a 12-0 regular season, sneak up on any of their opponents. Virginia Tech finished last season at 10-4, winning the ACC, and defeating Cincinnati in the Orange Bowl.  However, Va Tech has suffered a series of off-season injuries and must find strong QB play in order to contend on the national stage.  The Alabama defense is (for lack of a better word) stacked and probably will be looking to make a statement after last season's losses to Florida and Utah.  Greg McElroy's QB performance will be adequate and the Bama defense will be stellar.

Alabama 21, Virginia Tech 10

Florida International

While still a pretty poor opponent, FIU has been trending upward (at least in the wins column) over the last two seasons.  After an 0-12 season in 2006 (including a 38-3 loss to Alabama), the Golden Panthers "improved" to 1-11 (only win coming against North Texas) in 2007, and then 4-8 in 2008.  FIU is one of the few teams that gets the privilege of taking on the preseason favorites to win the SEC West (Alabama) and the SEC East (Florida).  This game serves as a much-needed reduction in quality of opponent for Alabama after taking on the Hokies.

Alabama 45,  Florida International 7

North Texas

To say North Texas is "not good" is a bit of an understatement.  The Mean Green rolled to a 1-11 record last year and is 3-21 over the last two seasons.  This game has special meaning for Alabama QB Greg McElroy as he takes on his former high school coach Todd Dodge.

Alabama 42, North Texas 6

Arkansas

Alabama opens SEC play at home against what should be a much-improved Arkansas team under Coach Petrino.  I believe that Arkansas will be something of a surprise team this year and will certainly be competitive, perhaps even to the point of bowl eligibility.  Watch out for a Hog resurgence in the next few years.  However, Alabama is too strong at this point to drop this game at home.

Alabama 31,  Arkansas 9

@Kentucky

The Alabama-Kentucky game in Tuscaloosa was surprisingly close last year, with the Tide pulling out a 17-14 win.  The Tide raced to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, but seemed to let off the gas and allowed Kentucky to make it close.  Rich Brooks has done a quality job at Kentucky by simply keeping the Wildcats out of total mediocrity and in three consecutive bowl games.  Kentucky faces the unenviable task of facing Florida and Alabama in consecutive weeks.  After a likely thrashing at the hands of Florida, the result is not likely to be much different against Alabama.

Alabama 35, Kentucky 14

@Ole Miss

Ole Miss is this year's Georgia: An over-hyped, media darling that will likely under-deliver.  Houston Nutt is a quality coach and showed great potential in his first season in Oxford, but the media's elevation of the Rebels to SEC West contender is premature.  Alabama is simply to too strong, especially on the defensive side of the ball and will handle the Rebels in a hostile environment.

Alabama 27, Ole Miss 14

South Carolina

Steve Spurrier's tenure at South Carolina has been littered with disappointments.  Instead of lifting the Gamecocks into contention in the SEC East and on the national stage, USC has dwelt in the middle of the pack, never quite able to break through. This season will be no different.

Alabama 28, South Carolina 7

Tennessee

The SEC will be looking to tee off on Lane Kiffin's team after the rocky start to his tenure in Knoxville.  In what is destined to be a rebuilding year for the Vols, I suspect that this game in Tuscaloosa, in front of a blood-thirsty crowd, won't be pretty.

Alabama 31, Tennessee 10

LSU

The Tide survived Coach Saban's return to Baton Rouge last year with a thrilling overtime victory.  Playing at home is certainly favorable as even the considerably weaker 2007 edition of the Crimson Tide managed to nearly upset LSU in Tuscaloosa.  As always in this rivalry, emotions and tensions will be high on the field and in the stands.  Alabama may very well be ranked #1 or #2 at this point in the year.  As long as they handle the pressure, the Tide should pull this one off.

Alabama 20, LSU 13

@Mississippi State

Mississippi State pulled off a fantastic hire in bringing in Dan Mullen from Florida.  Give Mullen a few years and MSU will again be competitive (assuming he can convince recruits to come to Starkville; not an easy task).  For the time being, however, the Bulldogs will likely be in a rebuilding mode and lack the talent to compete with the elite teams in the SEC.

Alabama 31, Mississippi State 14

UT-Chattanooga

If this game weren't serving as a tune-up for the Auburn game it would be an embarrassment.  Actually, it's kind of embarrassing to take on such a foe at any point in time.  UT-Chatt is no stranger to playing games against high caliber FCS teams.  Last season, the Mocs were drubbed by both Oklahoma (57-2) and Florida State (46-7).  These experiences won't help them as the Alabama back-ups get a load of playing time.

Alabama 45, UT-Chattanooga 3

@Auburn

Alabama broke through Auburn's six game winning streak in this series in a big way with a 36-0 statement of a win.  The loss certainly contributed to Tommy Tuberville's departure from Auburn, leading to the mystifying hiring of Gene Chizik.  I have a feeling (I suspect not just wishful thinking) that Auburn will struggle mightily this year and I'm not sure I see an end in sight for Alabama's dominance of the Tigers.

Alabama 31, Auburn 10

Season record: 12-0
SEC West Champions.  Probable loss to Florida in the SEC Championship Game and a return to the Sugar Bowl.
