HikiCulture says...

I will start off by saying that I am impressed by how active HikiCulture has become, and how much it has grown since creating it in late July of this year (2009). I initially wasn't sure if the forum would ever get more than twenty members (if that). Secondly, I want to say that the amount of new posts being contributed to the site (on most days) is quite impressive, to say the least.

There is one slight "problem" though - there are far too few threads being created.

Some of the HikiCulture boards have less than ten threads in them. Lots of guests who visit this site probably think that the place is somewhat inactive, or doesn't have much to offer when they see that the place has so few threads to discuss things in, thus preventing them from registering.

If every member could create a couple threads a week, or even a new thread a day (some people on the forums I'm on do this), HikiCulture would really have a lot more to offer and would not feel so banal.

Some members have been fine when it comes to creating new threads, but many have created hardly any, or simply no threads at all -- I am not sure if there's a reason for this, but it's a shame.

Don't be shy to create new threads; doing so will help make HikiCulture a better place with much more to offer.

Sent from my iPhone

I spent all morning crafting a post for The EHR/EMR Show. This pic shows how many steps I took, after taking Max for a walk, and the post midday time: 1475. For a 10,000 step daily goal, this should be more like 4-6,000 by 2 PM.

Just before the walk: 104 steps. As in, 1% of what the daily healthy total should be.

Gahhh.

Not helped by working until 5 AM, on...the same blog post. Got up in a haze, quaffed some apple cider (sugar water), and had a bowl of cereal before coming to my senses and having some proteinaceous eggs and ham.

So. Poor sleep, poor food choices, and no exercise. Waiting for perfect isn't just a FAIL; it's a lifesuck of the highest order.

Ever noticed how when you blog, you can't do anything else? See the plaintive look on Max's face? Family suffers, too.

Semi pro posts...maybe deserve careful crafting, links, proofing, nice images from iStockphoto. But those take me several hours.

My utilitarian medical training is starting to reassert itself. Life is too short, to not be living.

san francisco: make your way up the sweeping hills of the city to presidio st and pacific st where you'll find an entrance back down into san francisco's presidio. walk down and around, through the trees and about the greens on paved ways and ad hoc paths. there's a ton of secluded bits to explore. when you start running into tourists and too many people, you have my permission to get out of there immediately.

Continuing with my series "Get active in the classroom!", here is another activity by Marc Helgesen which worked very well to reinforce directions in another language. I did this with my grade 12 group (17 years old). Although they are grown up students, they do need a bit of action from time to time as they tend to be a bit lethargic! We learnt how to give and understand directions in town. Then, as a follow up activity, we did the Tour guide in Madrid. I created cards to put on the walls and tables in the classroom. They were showing La Plaza Mayor, El Parque del Retiro, El museo del Prado, Atocha on them and some shops in Spanish we had learnt previously. It was a double lesson and students had a 5 minutes break so I had time to fix the cards in the classroom without them watching. When students returned from their break, I asked them to stay in the corridor and I explained the following:

1.  Students worked in pairs. One was a tour guide. The other was a tourist. The tourist is blindfolded.

2.  The tour guide directed the tourist around the classroom, giving directions and pointing out things that are interesting. (The tour guide may not touch the tourist). Only spoken instructions are allowed. The tour guide encourages the tourist to touch and pick-up objects. Naturally, the tour guides need to be careful so the tourists don’t hurt themselves, bump into things or other people, etc.

3. When each pair of students had finished their tour, we had a discussion of what makes for good directions, things that were easy or difficult to explain. We also talked about the main sights in Madrid.

Students really enjoyed doing this, they thought it was a fun way of practicing the directions.

What about you? Which engaging activity do you do to practice directions?
