Walt Disney's A Christmas Carol trailer

I'm not a great fan of either animated films or Jim Carrey, so have not been expecting much from Disney's new 3D animated adaptation of A Christmas Carol.

This trailer doesn't do anything to raise my expectations at all, but as a dedicated Scroogeophile, I'm sure I'll find myself going to watch it anyway.

Dos estrenos de Disney para navidad: 'The Princess and the Frog' y 'A Christmas Carol'


Estamos en septiembre pero ya se perfilan los estrenos infantiles para navidad, uno con polémica incluida.

El primero es 'The Princess and the Frog' ('Tiana y el Sapo' en España), basada en el libro "La Princesa Rana" de E. D. Baker, la cual trae como novedad que la princesa es 'de color', supongo que por un tema de ser modernos ya que hay un presidente de EEUU negro y un Presidente de la NASA negro, ambos siendo los primeros en ocupar estos cargos.

Obviamente estos temas que representan cambios radicales siempre traen polémicas que rayan en lo absurdo, lo primero fue el nombre de la princesa que inicialmente era 'Maddy', normalmente una forma corta del nombre francés Madeleine, pero  que causo problemas ya que podía interpretarse como una variación de 'Mami' que en EEUU se usa como sobrenombre de las camareras de color, así que tuvieron que cambiar el nombre a 'Tiana'.

La segunda polémica es sobre el príncipe de nombre Naveen, del país europeo de Maldonia, que se supone que también es 'de color' pero los círculos de la comunidad afroamericana de EEUU se quejaron de que tenia rasgos blancos y que en ningún caso respetaba el estereotipo de hombre negro, y que el amor de una princesa negra fuera un hombre de rasgos blancos era ofensivo.

Calmaron las polémicas contratando para la voz de la madre de la princesa a Oprah Winfrey, que es la mujer de color más rica e influyente en EEUU.

El segundo estreno es del clásico mil veces reversionado del cuento de Charles Dickens: 'A Christmas Carol' (Los Fantasmas de Scrooge o un Cuento de Navidad), ahora animada en 3D por supuesto, dirigida por el genial Robert Zemeckis, con Jim Carrey dando voz a múltiples personajes, incluyendo a Scrooge que comenzara la navidad gritando a su fiel empleado (Gary Oldman) y a su alegre sobrino (Colin Firth).

La primera será estrenada el 11 de diciembre de 2009 en EEUU y el 4 de febrero de 2010 en España, la segunda el 6 de noviembre en EEUU y el 19 de noviembre en España.

A Christmas Carol

One of the more obscure versions of Dickens' masterpiece "A Christmas Carol" is being released on DVD on 13 October 2009 by Timeless Media Group.
 
I've not been able to find out much about this release. TMG's website has no mention of it and Amazon.com's listing is (at this point) very short on detail.
 
As far as I can make out, this is the CBS TV Shower of Stars adaptation that was broadcast on 23 December 1954. A musical adaptation (a downside for me, I'm afraid) featuring Fredric March as Scrooge and Basil Rathbone as Marley, this was unusual for Shower of Stars in that it was filmed and in colour (Shower of Stars was usually transmitted live in black and white). Most extant recordings, however, are only in black and white, so unless a new print has turned up, the DVD will likely not be in colour. As for the quality of the DVD, that is anyone's guess...
