Surprisingly contemporary appearance by glorious Louise Brooks as scheming flapper. The story tracks the downfall and destruction of our enigmatic femme fatale whose life inevitably goes awry, despite – or maybe because of – her obvious charm, intelligence and talents.

As irresistible as Pandora's box itself, you just have to look! On my list as one of the greatest silents ever.

Fast forward! This is a sparkling experiment that manages to razzle and dazzle even 80 years later. The Soviet Union never looked more alluring, modern and glorious than in the roaring twenties.

Rape, murder and social pressure all wrapped together in a taut package. Psychologically intense thriller, perhaps the greatest of Hitchcock's early movies.

On my most surreal list.

Timid little weakling shows himself to be a real man after all, saving the day and winning both love and respect. A plot without surprises doesn't matter when the fun stuff is so genuinely... funny!

Megalomaniac in both subject and execution. An energetic young Napoleon fights from schoolground to battlefield and leaves me uninterested, even bored, in the process.

Dubiously dubbed the first true talkie, this lightweight musical melodrama has its interesting moments, even to a present-day spectator. Insights on religion, self-fulfilment and a generation gap too wide to handle. Or?

Cannot really decide whether this one stays on my list or not.
