And heres the Music Video for "Idiot" (Produced by Rieces Pieces & 100Akres) Video (Made by Rieces Pieces)
The two files below are a perfect example; The first mp3 is the original version of "Idiot" (if your curious it took about a month and a half and was Produced between 3 cities Tampa, San Antonio & Los Angeles to get to the final version.)
After I heard the demo of the rough demo of the 1st verse and hook of the song I put together a reference track and sent it to the artist with the full direction on how the song should sound once its completed. I wanted to combine the live drum elements of rock and the hard hitting elements of hip hop. Most attempts by hiphopers to try to crossover and sing Rock songs don't end well. More importantly, I wanted this song to sound as authentic as possible (Coming fresh off of a 2 year hiatus from music period, this was actually the first song produced since 2006. Funny story; (real quick I promise) the artist actually called me for 2 years str8 before I eventually answered and I just said you know what lets do this. I said if we're going to do this its got to be something different. Being in Texas afforded me the opportunity to both hide from the recession and also to get influenced by a lot of other genres I never listened to when I lived in Florida. But I digress lets get back into the production side here)
I had him record the first then the 2nd verse of the song this was done to a bare track with just drums and a basic idea of what I wanted the guitars to sound like (The fancy synths bass etc you hear at the end wasn't added until after all the vocals were recorded and I used some of the leftover adlibs (Na Na Na) to write the bridge). I also snuck a couple takes of myself singing it real low to thicken it up. Then I took my favorite line of the song "I told my girl that I cheated" and moved it to the end of the song and added the "sorry momma but I'm hitting the block tonight" at the end to complete the phrase. Then I went crazy with the synths, there were actually a lot more but I kno people get confused and I didn't want to throw too much out there. After spending a month with it I still felt like it had room to grow and with 100Akres' experience in these kind of projects I knew he was the man for the job. After he spent another 2 weeks with the song, He recommended we make some changes and added live bass and enlisted Craig Banks and Dale Jennings as the studio musicians on bass & lead guitar. Finally when we finished and looked back we were like "HOLY SHIT I THINK WE GOT SOME THING."
Special Thanks to Grammy Winning Mix Engineer Neal Pogue who did a phenomenal job on the mix and was always willing to lend his ear and offer feedback and words of advice on this project. Since early cavemen began beating on objects an making sounds to the early battle cries and chants of Medieval soldiers music has always been about collaboration. However as technology advanced we have gradually moved furthur and furthur away from those humble beginnings. Nowadays its not uncommon to hear of artists collaborating on entire projects without even being in the studio together or face to face at any point in the process. Between Skype, Dropbox, Twitter, Gmail, FTP Clients etc… Why would you even need to anymore?
In my humble opinion, despite having access to large gigabyte instrument recreation software and synth patches that are incredibly real, I prefer the good ol fashion sound of a real instrument. There is no software on the market that accurately recreates the sound of the in between notes that come out of an amateur recording. The sound of the wires on a guitar head chiming with each strum of the guitar, the ringing noises that reverberate from the light brushing of other strings in chord progression changes, even the rhythyms created from obstructing the vibration of a prior note are all great imperfections that make a world of differance in giving an organic sound. I love a clean sound and I mean LOVE IT. I spent 4 years years trying to get that pristine sound popular music is known for.. only to find out that its a pretty uninteresting sound. What I mean by that is that it lacks character…
But I digress, returning to my earlier point the collaborative effort of bringing in outside musicians allows me more freedom than i’ve ever had as a musician. Stephen and Stefan are more than just guys who come in and play the ideas in my head or replay software synth guitar parts they are the right side of my brain and allow me to find ways to be different in other genres. From an arranger/producer standpoint we have been spending the last few days combining sum off key and non traditional chord progression changes with some of the urban rhythmic “bounce” for a few of my upcoming projects. FUN STUFF :-)
Also I have enlisted the help of another fellow producer to Co-produce about 3 or 4 tracks with me on my next project. I believe that from time to time every producer has to take his music maker hat off and put on a project manager hat. Delgado has been producing various genres out of the storied Morrisound Studios in Tampa, Florida for years and has his own seperate following and sound. I believe he will bring the element we need to balance the sound that I plan on releasing on this project. All in all, my main point is collaboration is key and the next time you’ve got an important project that you are completing on you own, take a moment to think how much better AND easier it would be if you had a lil help!
